Position: Manager, Advocacy & Strategic Alliances -Policy Lead

Overview

Aurinias Advocacy and Strategic Alliance Manager is a U.S. field-based position, that promotes awareness and provides disease-state education about lupus nephritis to patients, care partners, healthcare professionals, and executives. The role focuses on formulating partnerships with local advocacy organizations, trusted community leaders, and key lupus centers within an assigned territory.

Aurinia is currently seeking a Manager/Sr. Manager, Advocacy & Strategic Alliances Policy Lead to orchestrate local/state based policy efforts on the Advocacy & Strategic Alliances team. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and analyzing legislative issues related to lupus/lupus nephritis and chronic disease. Developing a solid strategy that supports and amplifies Advocacy and Government Affairs priorities is key for success in this role.

The position will serve as a key member of the Advocacy & Strategic Alliances team while working in close alignment with the Executive Directors of Advocacy Relations and Government Affairs to eliminate access barriers to lupus/lupus nephritis screening and treatment. They will work with internal stakeholders to ensure continuity and consistency in messaging and execution in advocacy/policy materials. The applicant should be well versed in addressing the needs of underserved communities and implementing meaningful programs that empower patients to take charge of their health.

This is a field-based position located in the DC metro area.

Responsibilities

  • Listen to the needs of our patient, prescriber, and payer advocacy groups, to creatively align influencers, and impact legislative, political, and regulatory processes to improve patient health.
  • Possess a clear understanding of business needs, Medicaid policies, patient access and coverage barriers, and market trends.
  • Maintain a constant connection between business objectives and our policy, legislative and advocacy priorities.
  • Monitor and analyze legislative issues related to the lupus/lupus nephritis community and legislative agendas of Aurinias external advocacy partners.
  • Work with the Executive Director, Government Affairs to identify influential policy makers that support and elevate Aurinias policy agenda.
  • Represent the Advocacy team at policy meetings and functions centralized around our advocacy agenda.
  • Serve as the Advocacy field teams point of contact for legislative relationships and key initiatives.
  • Manage cross-functional efforts to communicate health policy news to internal colleagues.
  • In collaboration with the Communications team, draft policy memos, communication pieces, and other content about health policy issues for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Engage partner organizations in advocacy activities related to Aurinias health policy issues and develop strategies for increasing advocate engagement in hill days, campaigns, briefings, etc.
  • Build relationships with congressional, federal agency, and external organization offices at the discretion of the Executive Director of Government Relations.
  • In coordination with Advocacy Relations staff, provide strategic direction for the development of grassroots campaigns and messaging; media and social media campaigns; and Hill Days.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate exemplary collaboration with internal colleagues and external partners through facilitating strategic engagements that promote action to provide solutions that impact socio-economic barriers and increase LN education and awareness to impact health outcomes.
  • Create and cultivate strong partnerships to assist in identifying and addressing the needs of our patient, prescriber, payor and advocacy stakeholders.
  • Convene key influencers and stakeholders to improve awareness, education and health outcomes for people living with lupus.
  • Reduce health disparities prominent in the LN community through assessing overall gaps in equitable healthcare, providing solutions that impact socio-economic barriers.
  • Perform ongoing health equity needs assessment that incorporates feedback from established and potential community partners and cultivate Health Equity Champions (HCP & patient) throughout territory.
  • Lead awareness and education efforts to engage and support the needs of Key Lupus Centers, Patient Advocacy Groups, and key stakeholders in assigned territory.
  • Elevate LN education and awareness that drives urgency to diagnose and treat LN and improve patient persistence and adherence to generate positive renal outcomes.
  • Implement patient and HCP programs and expand awareness month campaigns that drive routine monitoring and screening for LN.
  • Align closely with internal teams to understand advocacy & equity goals and objectives; Possess clear understanding of business needs, patient access and coverage barriers, and market trends and share insights gained with key stakeholders.
  • Align appropriate resource allocation with budget, strategic imperatives, and SAM team and corporate goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in public policy, public health political science or related field; Masters degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5-7 years experience in pharmaceutical industry; experience in medical association, advocacy organization and/or congressional office strongly preferred.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% (including local travel that is part of assigned territory) and work weekends or after-hours, on occasion.
  • Team-oriented leader and a trusted partner who demonstrates strong skills in working collaboratively with internal and external partners.
  • Understanding of and ability to create relationships with trusted community leaders and possess the ability to convene key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates exceptional abilities in prioritization, planning, organizing, decision-making, problem solving and accountability; coupled with the capacity to act urgently and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Outstanding customer service skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Experience engaging with health care providers and academic centers is preferred with ability to initiate and cultivate strong, meaningful relationships.
  • Solid written communication skills, plus excellent business and basic media relations writing skills (writing summaries, brief articles and drafting simple press releases, etc.)
  • Tact and solid professional verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
