About the Position

Title: Manager or Senior Manager for Media Relations
This position offers a talented communications professional the opportunity to work in a dynamic, fast-moving environment as part of CBPP’s Communications team to help advance policy goals. Through substantial media relations expertise and knowledge of CBPP’s issues, the Manager or Senior Manager will develop and execute media strategy for cross-cutting policy priorities, responding to a rapidly shifting media and policy landscape.

Responsibilities

  • Develop communications strategies across a range of issues to maximize CBPP’s impact in public debates and advance short- and long-term policy objectives.
  • Monitor press coverage and social media for emerging developments or breaking news. Collaborate with colleagues to develop coordinated strategies for rapid response opportunities.
  • Develop creative ideas for proactive pitching and press outreach, including engaging with podcast producers and non-traditional media.
  • Plan and execute the release of CBPP content such as reports, blog posts, statements, and commentaries. Support press engagement around CBPP-hosted events.
  • Build and maintain media relationships to position CBPP as a go-to resource.
  • Field media inquiries and support CBPP spokespeople in preparing effective responses and interviews.
  • Draft communications materials, including plans, press releases, statements, talking points, pitches, and email content.
  • Collaborate with media relations leadership and the Communications team to align strategies and report key developments.
  • Work with partner organizations on joint strategies, events, and messaging.
  • Contribute to CBPP’s equity and inclusion work.

Qualifications

Manager for Media Relations:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of professional experience in Communications or a related field, including three years of substantial media outreach experience.

Senior Manager for Media Relations:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of seven years of professional experience in Communications or a related field, including five years of substantial media outreach experience.

Additional Skills and Qualities:

  • Strong experience with and knowledge of economic security and health policy issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to foster relationships across teams.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and justice in communications work.
  • Existing reporter relationships highly desired.

Location and Work Schedule

This position is based in Washington, D.C. CBPP operates on a hybrid work schedule, with two in-office days per week (Tuesday and Wednesday) and the first Thursday of each month in the Washington, D.C. office.

Terms of Employment

  • Type: Full-time, exempt; two-year term.
  • Bargaining Unit Status: This is a bargaining unit position.
  • Compensation:
    • Manager: $70,000–$85,000 annually.
    • Senior Manager: $85,000–$115,000 annually.
      Pay is based on factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal pay equity. CBPP offers excellent benefits, including health insurance, vision and dental coverage, life and long-term disability insurance, retirement, MERP, DCAP, and generous vacation, sick leave, and holiday schedules.
