The American Urological Association (AUA) – Patient Advocacy Manager Position

The American Urological Association (AUA), the premier urologic association providing support to the urologic community, is currently searching for a Patient Advocacy Manager position located in our Linthicum, Maryland office or DC office. This position will have the possibility to telecommute up to 3 days a week.

In General

This position’s primary function is to implement the third pillar of the 2024-2029 Policy and Advocacy Strategic Plan by developing, implementing, and growing a proactive urologic patient advocacy strategy. The Patient Advocacy Manager leads the AUA Patient Advocacy Alliances (the Bladder Health Alliance, Kidney Cancer Impact Alliance, and Prostate Cancer Impact Alliance), which includes managing relationships with many patient advocacy groups, developing and delivering on the value proposition of the Alliances, and working collaboratively with others to seek funding for the Alliances. The Patient Advocacy Manager engages in grassroots and direct lobbying on behalf of patients with urologic conditions. The Patient Advocacy Manager directs the planning of in-person events, including the AUA, Inc.’s Patient Advocacy Connections Program, held in conjunction with the AUA, Inc.’s annual fly-in event.

Typically

The individual will:

  • Develop a proactive, strategic patient advocacy program that includes direct lobbying, grassroots and grasstops advocacy, and fundraising.
  • Manage all components of the Bladder Health Alliance, Prostate Cancer Impact Alliance, and Kidney Cancer Impact Alliance.
  • Cultivate relationships with stakeholders in other patient advocacy organizations to advance AUA, Inc.’s patient advocacy strategy, policies, and positions.
  • Serve as staff liaison for the Urology Telehealth Task Force (UTTF).
  • Support patient advocacy activities associated with the AUA Annual Urology Advocacy Summit.
  • Supervise the Advocacy Coordinator.

To be Successful

Candidates must provide leadership and have effective strategic thinking skills. It is essential that the individual in this role have strong professional, collaborative, and relationship-building skills; strong consensus building and action initiative competencies.

  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy or other relevant area of study required.
  • Minimum 5 years of federal lobbying or national organizing experience.
  • Minimum 3 years’ management experience.
  • Strong policy analysis, relationship building, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning skills required.
  • Experience successfully building consensus among individuals and groups with disparate views.
  • Knowledge of general access to care concerns at the state and federal level.
  • Health policy literacy.
  • Prior experience working with patients, caregivers, or patient advocacy organizations is preferred.
  • A dynamic leader with strong external relations and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to serve as a persuasive and powerful spokesperson.
