This position is based in Northbrook, Illinois. Hybrid work from certain states may be permitted in accordance with Astellas’ Responsible Flexibility Guidelines. Candidates interested in hybrid work are encouraged to apply.

Purpose:

The Director will provide policy support, insights, and guidance to two assigned priority brands as well as provide policy expertise in key areas of pharmaceutical policy such as Medicare reimbursement and drug pricing reform. The Director will provide expert insight and guidance to advise efforts of the Federal Government Affairs and State Government Affairs teams and will represent Astellas as a thought leader with external policy stakeholders to help advance Astellas policy priorities in assigned areas. The Director will help create policy positions that sustain a positive business environment for Astellas while positioning the company as a credible and respected leader in the health care industry. In this role, the Director will work in an integrated manner with key business functions to ensure the Company’s policy efforts support business objectives across the organization.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Set direction for the company’s strategy and priorities in key areas of health policy.
  • Lead policy generation and regularly conduct policy analyses to understand the impact on company P&L and the relative priority of a given issue.
  • Closely collaborate with Federal and State Government Affairs and Government Communications to ensure alignment of policy and advocacy activities and create robust policy development positions.
  • Represent Government Affairs & Policy as an extended member of priority brand teams.
  • Lead Astellas cross-functional teams to solve problems and identify novel, practical solutions to policy needs and changes.
  • Interface closely with internal business leads and create and offer strategic and tactical options for our business and functional leaders.

Qualifications Required:

  • 8 years of government strategy/policy experience or in related fields.
  • Expertise in creating and developing government policy positions in a corporate setting.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of the pharmaceutical industry and health policy from a corporate and broader environmental perspective.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team and cross-functionally in an organization.
  • Actively seeks out and supports collaborative thinking and problem solving with others in the organization.
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing, negotiation, and communication skills (written and verbal) to effectively address all levels.

Preferred:

  • An advanced degree such as a Juris Doctor, Master’s in public health, Public Policy, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Pharmaceutical/healthcare industry experience.
  • Experience with national and/or state/regional healthcare industry associations.
  • Government or political experience – executive or legislative.
