WHO WE ARE

The mission of Maryland Family Network (MFN) is to ensure that very young children have strong families, quality early learning environments, and a champion for their interests. We work in collaboration with public and private funders, community-based organizations, parents, and other individuals and agencies to support those who care for young children as families strive to reach their goals.

Through two-generation programs that support parents to become economically self-sufficient, raise healthy, successful children, and find quality child care; through regional services that help child care professionals improve their practice; and through public policy advocacy of programs and policies that benefit families with young children, MFN strives to ensure that all Maryland children are cared for by adults who are skilled to raise them in environments that are conducive to growth and development.

Position Summary

The Public Policy Coordinator plays a key role in executing Maryland Family Network’s (MFN) public policy initiatives. This position involves developing, advocating for, and implementing policies that align with MFN’s mission and values. The Public Policy Coordinator plays a vital role in building relationships with stakeholders, conducting research and analysis, and supporting advocacy efforts.

Success in this role requires a strong understanding of legislative and regulatory processes, excellent communication skills, strategic thinking, and a commitment to advancing MFN’s goals through effective public policy.

Essential Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports Director of Public Policy and Public Policy Committee.
  • Coordinates Public Policy Committee meeting agendas and bill tracking.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of legislative strategy.
  • Grows an aligned community of advocates through direct support and communication.
  • Maintains relationships with Coalition partners.
  • Leads MFN e-advocacy and online public policy presence, including stakeholder communications.
  • Serves as a liaison to a diverse network of community groups, organizations, and agencies to develop advocacy coalitions.
  • Informs advocacy components of parent and provider engagement activities.
  • Monitors national partners communications about Federal advocacy.

  • Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to grasp complex policy issues and make informed recommendations.
  • Outstanding communication and advocacy abilities, both written and verbal.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain influential relationships with stakeholders and partners.
  • A deep understanding of public policy issues, legislative processes, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public administration, sociology, social work and/or education or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years working in advocacy or in a public agency, non-profit or community-focused organization with knowledge of advocacy work or with significant relevant course work.
  • Demonstrable experience building diverse and effective alliances and collaborations.
  • Familiarity with the Maryland early childhood landscape preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Maryland State political process preferred.
  • Familiarity with policy issues and practices related to family and child advocacy.
  • Familiarity with communications, digital engagement tools, and platforms preferred.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Self-motivated, creative thinker with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and problem-solve.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and online communication tools a plus.
