BASIC FUNCTION
Increase awareness of ACEP among ACEP members and external audiences. Promote the impact, priorities and successes that make ACEP a champion for emergency physicians and their patients across all communications channels. Translate complex science, data or policy for diverse audiences across ACEP channels. Work with ACEP Communications staff to ensure that key pages on the ACEP.org website are maintained to showcase progress and initiatives related to those issues.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with the Director of Public Relations to proactively position ACEP at the forefront of emerging trends, as a thought leader, and national champion of initiatives and policies to protect and empower emergency physicians.
- Manage many of ACEP’s day-to-day content deliverables, including press releases, editorials, fact sheets, talking points, letters to the editor and/or executive speeches.
- Work across the ACEP communications team to inform multichannel campaigns and simplify complex topics for digital and social platforms. Write posts, create/inform infographics, and direct the communication of key concepts in the most effective way.
- Develop and maintain media relationships to ensure ACEP messages and spokespeople are prominently and accurately featured across news platforms. Create materials to support earned, owned and paid media coverage that reinforce ACEP as the leading national voice of emergency physicians.
- Identify and implement innovative strategies to leverage a network of ACEP brand ambassadors who can effectively communicate emergency physicians’ stories and expertise to health care decision makers, policymakers and patients.
- Proactively engage with ACEP Committees and Sections to identify important issues/topics, uncover possible stories and expert sources, and emerging trends, in line with overall objectives.
- Work closely with ACEP’s Advocacy team to find creative and compelling ways to advance ACEP policy objectives and promote advocacy campaigns.
- Assist with planning and delivery of media training for ACEP’s Board of Directors, senior staff, chapter/section leaders and brand ambassadors in communicating with external audiences.
- Assist Director of Public Relations with tracking, delivering and reporting on key assignments based on agreed deadlines.
- Attend meetings and conduct additional work as assigned.

Media; Board members; ACEP members including the Communications Committee; chapter staff and officers; national medical and health policy reporters; national health, policy, and advocacy organizations, medicine and health care policymakers; corporate senior staff and communications staff; communications directors and senior staff of other associations; chapter executives and leaders; advocacy or political staffers as appropriate.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or a related field.
- Five to eight years of experience and demonstrated ability to distill complex topics into clear and concise communications that a layperson can understand, and to utilize various communication formats and channels based on the topic at hand.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously and to respond successfully under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience managing digital communication channels including newsletters, websites, and social media.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Other Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or a related field.
- Familiarity with issues in health-related issues, emergency medicine and organized medicine.
- Experience working in a membership association.
- Brand management, stakeholder engagement, or crisis communications experience.
