Senior Director, Food Policy

Reports to: President & CEO

ORGANIZATION

A medium-sized national agriculture trade association based in Washington, DC that is focused on public policy at the state, federal, and international level.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Senior Director, Food Policy leads development and execution of science-based policy regarding food, nutrition, agriculture, and product safety at the international, federal, state, and local levels. Coordinates food policy and food safety committees at the direction of the President & CEO.

DUTIES

• Oversees and executes organization policy strategies regarding food, nutrition, agriculture, and product safety and quality.
• Uses best management practices to lead association committees. Plans committee in-person meetings and calls.
• As necessary, registered lobbyist, advocating for science-based policies.
• Builds and maintains relationships with government officials, non-profits, academia, and industry allies. Coordinates dialogue between colleagues and potential partners.
• Regularly monitors, evaluates, analyzes, and reports on government policies, regulations, food industry trends, impacts, threats, and opportunities, providing strategic insights/recommendations to CEO, Board of Directors, relevant association committees, and industry allies.
• Produces in-depth issue papers, one-pagers, talking points, newsletter articles, committee reports, and other documents, as needed. Maintains a workplan for each issue engaged.
• Manages multiple legislative and regulatory consultants on a project-by-project basis from start to execution, including annual renewal of contracts.
• Drafts committee annual budgets with input from members, working with President & CEO to finalize budget ahead of Board approval.
• Manages an intern and coordinates specific organization projects.
• Participates and plays a leading role in DC-based legislative and regulatory coalitions, developing working relationships based on common interests.
• Represents organization at various events, including those with government officials, non-profits, academia, and industry partners.

QUALIFICATIONS

• At least five (5) years working in the food, agriculture, and/or nutrition field.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the U.S. regulatory system, including developing comments on regulatory proposals.
• Adaptable to change and proven experience managing multiple project deadlines.
• Collaborative and team-oriented, displaying sound judgment and personal integrity.
• Proven communicator with different stakeholders, including possessing effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in food science, nutrition, public policy, agriculture, or related fields. Master’s degree in related areas or registered dietitian preferred.
