Senior Vice President of Strategic Alliances and Partnerships
The Senior Vice President of Strategic Alliances and Partnerships will lead the development and execution of UnitedHealth Group’s strategic partnership initiatives and engagement with key external policy and advocacy stakeholders.
As a senior leader within UnitedHealth Group’s External Affairs function, the role requires a dynamic and visionary executive with a proven track record in forging and managing high-impact partnerships and strategic initiatives. Located in Washington, D.C., the role reports to the Executive Vice President of Public Policy and works closely with colleagues within External Affairs (including the Government Affairs and Public Policy team) and across the enterprise to advance UnitedHealth Group’s mission to help people live healthier lives and help the health system work better for everyone.
Primary Responsibilities
Strategic Vision
- Develop and implement a strategic vision for UnitedHealth Group’s partnership and external stakeholder ecosystem, aligning with overall business objectives.
Partnership Strategy
- Serve as the primary advocate of UnitedHealth Group’s priorities to a wide range of advocacy groups, bipartisan and nonpartisan public policy organizations, and think tanks.
- Develop alliances and partnerships around strategic and business objectives with a broad group of external stakeholders, coalitions, and organizations.
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Identify, analyze, prioritize, and regularly communicate the business and reputational implications for UnitedHealth Group of policy views held by internal stakeholders to external stakeholders and organizations (and vice versa).
- Partner with internal stakeholders to define strategic engagement plan priorities to ensure comprehensive and coordinated engagement, particularly with external policy and advocacy organizations that may have overlapping stakeholders at UnitedHealth Group.

Required Qualifications
- 15+ years of relevant experience working with or in a wide range of advocacy groups, bipartisan and nonpartisan public policy organizations, and think tanks.
- 15+ years of experience in government affairs, alliance development, policy, or public affairs.
- 15+ years of experience in roles with direct management and/or matrix leadership.
- Solid relationship-building skills and ability to communicate proactively and effectively with diverse stakeholders inside and outside the organization.
- Solid existing relationships with public policy advocacy groups, think tanks, and other organizations that influence public policy at the federal, state, and/or local levels.
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships and influence internal and external stakeholders.
- Good negotiation, problem-solving, planning, and decision-making skills. Accurately scopes out projects, sets objectives and goals, develops schedules and resource assignments, measures performance against goals, and evaluates results.
- Proven ability to build relationships cross-functionally and lead toward common goals.
- Ability to effectively deal with ambiguity—can effectively cope with change, can shift gears comfortably, can decide and act without having the total picture, and comfortably handles risk and uncertainty in a collaborative manner.
- Demonstrated leadership and hands-on experience; strong leader and motivator with the ability to mentor talent within the organization; able to provide work direction; able to attract and retain top talent.
- Proven ability to create and lead engagement strategies to achieve public policy goals, preferably for a business.
- Experience developing strategic partnerships at federal, state, and/or local levels; designing and driving policy campaigns and advocating policy goals to government officials and/or leaders of organizations influencing public policy.
- Experience advising business leadership on public policy developments and implications.
- Visionary and strategic thinker.
Salary and Benefits for Washington, D.C. Residents
The salary range for Washington, D.C. residents is $350,000 to $450,000 per year. Pay is based on several factors, including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, and certifications. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase, and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
