Basic Description:

Responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive strategic communications and marketing program for the Council. Oversee and direct two broad initiatives:

NMHC’s Member Information/Content Strategy:

Including digital/web communications.

Public Affairs, Public Relations, and Marketing:

Essential Duties:

  • Serve on the president’s senior management team and participate in the organization’s ongoing strategic plan implementation.
  • Develop and lead communications plan for NMHC which identifies objectives, clarifies target audiences, articulates a positioning statement or message, strategies and tactics to meet stated objectives.
  • Develop and lead implementation of public and media relations strategy to elevate the image of the apartment industry with policymakers and thought leaders.
  • Work with NMHC’s Government Affairs department to develop and implement advocacy communications strategy.
  • Serve as on-the-record spokesperson for media interviews on behalf of NMHC, as needed, and support other subject matter experts who are speaking on behalf of the organization.
  • Identify and leverage emerging communications outlets that connect NMHC with new constituents, support awareness of NMHC’s brand and serve the organization’s strategic goals.
  • Support coalition work in partnership with Government Affairs and other external organizations, as needed.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning and staff development.
  • Hire and manage staff who can implement communication and marketing strategies from various platforms.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the marketing function including budgeting, planning and staff development.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities and conduct annual performance appraisals.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Other Requirements:

Attend meetings as necessary. Some extended travel may be required.

Skill and Knowledge Requirements:

  • Minimum 10 years in a senior management role in communications or public affairs.
  • Strong leadership skills and senior-level managerial, problem-solving and strategic planning capability and policy/program implementation.
  • Experience successfully running integrated issue or political campaigns, including knowledge of polling/focus groups, media relations, advertising, social media and grassroots/grasstops.
  • Deep understanding of the legislative and regulatory process at the Federal and State/Local levels.
  • Experience with on-the-record media interviews.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate, both written and orally, with diverse audiences and high-profile individuals.
  • Excellent analytic and organizational skills including priority setting required.
  • Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.
  • Strong project management experience. Ability to handle concurrent projects through time, project and budget management.
  • Ability to be an excellent team player as well as work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with associations or membership groups strongly preferred. Knowledge of rental housing business and advocacy issues a plus.
  • B.A. or B.S. required. Prefer degree in journalism or communications.
