How is This Role Important to Our Work?

This position reports to the Director of Public Relations & Internal Communications and serves as a key lead in the development and implementation of strategic internal communications that support the organization’s goals and mission.

The primary focus is messaging development across established and emerging lines of business and subsidiaries under the same parent company as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. This role builds strategies and tactics that translate strategic initiatives to all levels of the organization to increase business acumen of the core insurance business, related business initiatives, and the overall healthcare industry.

The role works closely with teams from Public Relations, Strategy, Events, Marketing, and Brand, providing shared service support to company leadership. It also serves as a program lead in internal communication functions that promote overall associate engagement, advance thought leadership, and support strategic priorities.

The position leads highly matrixed internal communications work requiring strong collaboration with multiple business partners throughout the company. It also serves as a subject-matter expert on specific business areas and stakeholder audiences to advance the overall enterprise strategy. The position is accountable for providing reputation management counsel to senior leadership and content creation at all levels.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and delivers messages aligned with the organization’s values and goals, targeting specific audiences to influence behaviors and perceptions.
  • Provides strategic internal communications counsel, including project management deliverables (content creation, timelines, activation goals) through effective brand journalism writing.
  • Co-develops internal communications and content plans that advance goals and build internal communication capabilities, processes, and content in assigned business areas.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Public Relations and Internal Communications to coordinate matrixed communication strategies that enhance reputation, advance business objectives, and reinforce company culture, mission, and values.
  • Ensures all communications objectives are achieved and that communications are consistent, well-executed, and evaluated.
  • Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with internal partners to collaborate on alignment opportunities.
  • Effectively builds and manages relationships within the organization to achieve business objectives through internal communications and public relations support.
  • Manages time and resources accurately and independently.
  • Provides business and consumer-focused internal communications through strong writing skills that synthesize complex information into impactful messages and narratives.

Nice to Have

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Communications experience within the health industry
  • 10+ years of communications experience, with 3+ years of supporting senior executive teams and external stakeholders
  • Strategic communications experience, including setting direction and making key decisions about what, when, and how to communicate for maximum impact

Requirements and Experiences

  • 7+ years of related public relations and/or internal communications experience. All relevant experience, including work, education, transferable skills, and military experience, will be considered.
  • 1+ years of staff, team lead, or project leadership experience.
  • Experience utilizing strategic communication models of support with top-level executives and internal stakeholders.
  • Exceptional collaboration skills, with the ability to partner effectively within matrixed organizations.
  • Demonstrable skills in writing strategic narratives. Proven ability to present complex business ideas, strategies, and results succinctly and persuasively at a senior executive level.
  • Highly effective writing and verbal presentation skills that drive impactful stakeholder action.
  • Strong collaborator able to work well across teams.
  • Effective presentation skills with advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
