Protect Democracy

​Protect Democracy seeks an experienced Technology Policy Advocate who is passionate about developing technology policies that combat disinformation and organizing strategic coalitions around those policies.

Policy Advocates lead Protect Democracy’s efforts to influence congressional offices, state-level policymakers, executive branch officials, and similar decision-makers through policy creation, direct outreach, and coalition building. The Technology Policy Advocate role is a new position for candidates with deep technology sector and policy expertise to lead our disinformation-related legislative and regulatory work. The Technology Policy Advocate will spearhead our efforts to identify and create or refine actionable solutions that simultaneously address the spread of anti-democratic disinformation while protecting the freedom of speech that supports our system of self-government. This work will strategically advance our mission to prevent the United States from declining into a more authoritarian form of government.

Our team includes people who have Republican, Democratic, and independent backgrounds, and we strongly encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds and from across the political and ideological spectrum to apply. You can work from any location in the United States, with regular travel to Washington, DC, in support of federal advocacy.

The Technology Policy Advocate will:

  • Generate creative policy solutions that will encourage fact-based public discourse and support democratic norms and institutions.
  • Assess existing technology policy proposals to determine which are most likely to achieve the real-world impact that we seek, keeping in mind both the need to combat disinformation and the risk that authoritarian elements will weaponize policy that empowers the government to control the flow of information.
  • Write, publish, and speak publicly to highlight the need for specific pro-democracy technology reforms and to build support among other nongovernmental organizations, academia, and the general public for the theories of change to achieve such reforms.
  • Build coalitions of leaders, organizations, and activists across the political spectrum in support of technology policy that will protect, rebuild, and perfect our democracy.
  • Develop, propose, and lead strategic campaigns aimed at influencing political and civic leaders at both the federal and state levels to enact the set of such policies that we support, and work with legislators, agencies, experts, and coalitions to advance them.
  • Partner with colleagues on advocacy campaigns that will dovetail with our legal and litigation work, to amplify both.
  • Draft concrete legislative or regulatory proposals and policy documents with minimal supervision, and supervise team members to prepare these materials.
  • Brief reporters and provide expert commentary on complex policy issues and solutions.
  • Work at both the federal and state level—therefore experience at either level is valuable.

An ideal candidate will possess:

  • For mid-career candidates, seven or more years of relevant professional experience, or four or more years of relevant experience and a relevant advanced degree. For more experienced candidates, 12 or more years of relevant professional experience, or 10 or more years of relevant experience and a relevant advanced degree.
  • A passionate commitment to rebuilding democratic norms and institutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate ideas and creative policy solutions related to disinformation and technology.
  • Ability to write convincing and accessible policy analysis, articles, opinion pieces, memos, and reports.
  • Ability to consider and understand the downstream effects of policy proposals on a wide variety of democratic values, including on free speech, press freedom and independence, and participation by disenfranchised groups.
  • Understanding of the landscape of current policy proposals related to combating digital disinformation, and of existing relevant law, both domestically and abroad.
  • Ability to persuasively present policy proposals to high-level decisionmakers, potential coalition partners, or think tanks/symposia through oral presentations and written products, and to work with people from diverse background and ideologies.
  • Ability to design and lead excellent technology policy development, campaigns, or advocacy initiatives, including legislative and/or executive branch lobbying strategies.
  • Excellent judgment about political activism, including what levers can make change happen with limited resources.
  • Comfort working in a collaborative start-up environment and partnering with team members from across disciplines.
  • Comfort with an open and transparent culture with constant feedback up, down, and sideways.


The starting salary range is $101,792 – $119,756 for mid-career candidates and $126,116 – $148,373 for more experienced candidates, commensurate with the candidate’s relevant experience, capabilities and skills and in alignment with internal equity.

About Protect Democracy

  • Flexible location. The only requirement is that your location be one that allows you to complete the demands of the position and mission. We currently have staff in Washington, DC, New York, Massachusetts, California, Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Washington, Arizona, and elsewhere around the country. Prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we offered shared workspaces in those locations for staff members who enjoy working in an office environment, and we have reopened our workspaces in line with current guidance.
