Essential Duties:

Law Improvement Program Administration:

  • Develops, implements, and administers the Law Improvement Program to increase effective participation of bar representatives and bar groups in governmental processes.
  • Assists with review, research, and communication on issues involving the judicial system and the practice of law.

Public Affairs Development:

  • Assists the Director of Public Affairs in developing internal policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes policy options and consequences, identifying political problems.
  • Formulates public policy recommendations for the Public Affairs program.

Research and Support:

  • Provides research materials and project development suggestions to the Public Affairs Director.
  • Supports public policy development, government relations, and lobby activities.
  • Assists in formulating legislative positions and educates bar members about legislative processes and ongoing issues.

Coordination and Communication:

  • Supports bar sections, committees, task forces, and local bar committees.
  • Coordinates with OSB staff and bar-related groups on law improvement issues.
  • Ensures professional and timely responses to member and public inquiries.
  • Disseminates issue and legislation information within the bar through various channels.

Record-keeping and Supervision:

  • Assists with tracking legislative bills and maintaining program records.
  • May provide functional direction over the Public Affairs Assistant or temporary staff.

Other Duties:

  • Serves as bar liaison to assigned sections, committees, task forces, and groups.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in Oregon.
  • Three years of legal and/or legislative work experience.
  • Knowledge of Oregon state government, particularly legislative and judicial systems.
  • Familiarity with legal principles, regulatory, and appellate law.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Typing speed of 40 WPM with accuracy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Interpersonal and conflict management skills.
  • Ability to work in a team and provide professional customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle conflicting needs and demands professionally.
  • Commitment to teamwork and cross-responsibility within the department.

Physical Requirements:

  • Communication via various channels.
  • Prolonged computer operation.
  • Data manipulation and typing.
  • Stationary work for extended periods.
  • Use of standard office equipment.
  • Ability to work in a moderately noisy environment.
  • Detail-oriented work requiring concentrated effort.
  • Occasional overnight travel for meetings and seminars.
