Public Relations Associate
The American Battlefield Trust, the nation’s premier historic land preservation nonprofit, seeks a Public Relations Associate to build awareness of the Trust, its mission, programs and impact. Using earned and owned media, as well as other creative outreach, you will introduce potential advocates and funders to our cause, ultimately saving hallowed ground and helping more Americans appreciate the ongoing resonance of our nation’s history.

- Reports to: Director of Communications
- Job Classification: Full-Time, Exempt
- Salary Range: $55,000 – $62,000 annually
- Benefits: vacation, sick leave, paid holidays, 403(b) retirement plan, health and dental insurance, life and AD&D insurance, disability insurance, paid parental leave, FSA, onsite gym at Washington, DC office
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Pro-actively seek to generate earned media in support of the Trust, its programs and initiatives
- Write news releases, statements, columns, articles, posts, emails and briefs about Trust activities for a variety of audiences, outlets and formats
- Research, identify and pitch outlets that carry sway in communities impacted by Trust work
- Advance messaging that defines the Trust brand and builds relationships with partner organizations to help us expand reach and impact
- Liaise with partner organizations to unify messaging and organize news/advocacy events
- Serve as an organizational spokesperson in print and on camera
- Create talking points and briefing documents to prepare Trust leadership for appearances
- Contribute content for Hallowed Ground, our award-winning membership magazine
- Quantify efficacy of outreach efforts and refine techniques to maximize impact
- Collaborate with internal teams to shape and populate social media campaigns
Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and 3-4 years of experience in media relations or communications
- Outstanding and efficient writing skills, including matching tone and style to the audience and medium without sacrificing clarity.
- Strong grammar and editing ability, including self-editing for succinctness and precision.
- Comfort speaking in public, off-the-cuff and on-the-record. Willingness to cold-call pitch media on the phone and via email.
- Demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities and meet firm deadlines
- Outstanding attention to detail paired with creativity and an eye for good design
- Excellent organizational skills coupled with a results-oriented and problem-solving mindset that seeks solutions and uses creativity to find workarounds as necessary
- Strong work ethic with the ability to thrive in both independent and collaborative settings
- Keen interest in American history and a flair for good storytelling
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite required; experience with Drupal CMS, graphic design and visual storytelling platforms and software highly valued
