The Environmental Law Institute (ELI) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Program Director to lead our Network for the Digital Economy and the Environment (nDEE) program. This position focuses on understanding and addressing the environmental impact of the digital economy by designing and executing projects that explore the intersections between technology, the digital economy, and the environment. This role aims to inform actionable policy to mitigate the negative impacts of digital technologies on the planet.
Salary Range: $87,942.00 – $117,256.00 Annually
About nDEE
The Network on the Digital Economy and the Environment (nDEE) is a collaborative project with a six-year history of research and engagement in the digital technology domain. A joint effort of the Environmental Law Institute, Yale University, and the University of California at Berkeley, nDEE aims to catalyze and disseminate research on the energy and environmental impacts of the digital economy. The project manages a Research Coordination Network (RCN) funded by the National Science Foundation and receives support from the Internet Society Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Responsibilities
- Direct and grow the nDEE project, including developing strategies, managing teams, finances, and coordinating with staff and external partners.
- Advance research on digital technologies’ environmental impacts and catalyze the growth of the research community.
- Lead fundraising efforts by leveraging existing relationships with foundations and cultivating new partnerships.
- Develop relationships with key stakeholders, including researchers, companies, NGOs, and policymakers.
- Supervise project staff, providing guidance to ensure high-quality work and timely deliverables.
- Engage with academic, policy, and advocacy communities to promote the organization’s output.
- Write reports, policy briefs, and documents to communicate research findings and recommendations to various audiences.
- Represent the project and ELI at conferences, meetings, and public events.
- Assist in developing additional focus areas such as clean energy technologies.
Qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree and 7+ years of experience in environmental policy, digital economy, technology, public policy, or public administration, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to be on-site in the DC office 2 days a week (remote work possible for the right candidate).
- Familiarity with the federal policy-making landscape.
- Proven experience raising funds and connecting with foundations and funders.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a team and work collaboratively with stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Substantive knowledge of digital technology’s impacts and benefits on the environment.
- Commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
- Ability to become proficient in new issue areas and contribute to rigorous analytical approaches.
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation: $87,942 to $117,256 annually, commensurate with experience. Benefits include:
