About This Position

The Manager, External Affairs will be responsible for assisting with community and stakeholder research and diligence for gigawatt-scale greenfield and M&A renewable energy projects (including wind, solar PV, and BESS) in the Great Plains, South Central Region, and the Pacific Northwest. This position provides the opportunity to work cross-disciplinarily across a wide variety of specialties, including permitting, business, finance, biology, policy, and real estate. This position will report directly to the Director of Community Engagement and work closely with Permitting, M&A, Development, Real Estate, Engineering, GIS, and Construction leads.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Perform critical community and stakeholder due diligence on potential M&A projects, and make informed and strategic recommendations to the M&A team on potential community risks and opportunities, leveraging consultant resources as needed, with little management oversight.
  • Research and clearly and comprehensively summarize external stakeholder opportunities, risks, and requirements for early-stage project jurisdictions.
  • Coordinate community engagement strategies, studies, and plans throughout the project lifecycle and asset operation.
  • Attend internal development meetings and identify opportunities for positive community engagement opportunities and planning.
  • Help establish Intersect as a contributing member of the community by developing and fostering communication with local project stakeholders (including project-related landowners, neighboring community members, elected officials, local government staff, etc.).
  • Serve as a frontline communication resource for community members and relevant stakeholders via email, telephone, and in-person events.
  • Plan and coordinate logistics for key stakeholder activities, including community consultation events, public meetings, sponsorships, and local media events.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in public affairs, communications, or similar discipline or related work experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in public affairs, communications, or community engagement for energy projects or large-scale infrastructure development.
  • 6+ years of experience in community engagement within the energy sector, with a strong preference for experience with data centers.
  • Experience utilizing mapping tools.
  • Strong experience conducting siting analysis and research.
  • Experience in building relationships and working with partners, stakeholders, and colleagues in a virtual environment.
  • Ability to work well with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences, including community leaders, residents, service providers, and elected officials.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to think creatively and develop novel solutions to unique community situations.
  • Strong ability to translate complex information into easily understood communication.
  • Knowledge of rural Midwestern and Southern communities.
  • Enthusiasm for engaging with people.

Physical and Sensory Requirements

  • Mostly sedentary work; using standard office equipment including a computer, keyboard, and telephone.
  • Position is part of a remote team, with regular electronic and video communication.
  • Position requires some travel for company-wide meetups: ~5 weeks total through a calendar year. *Full COVID-19 vaccination required to be eligible for travel.
  • In addition to traveling for Team Weeks, this position will require 20-30% yearly travel.

  • Salary: USD $130,000 – $145,000 base salary with a 25% annual target bonus.
