About the Role:

Capital One is looking for a strategic, creative and results-driven communications professional to join our Public Affairs team. Public Affairs is a cross-functional organization within Capital One’s External Affairs team that leverages best practices across public relations, marketing, political engagement, government affairs and digital campaign advocacy to enable business growth and mitigate risk.

As a key member of the Public Affairs team, you will help develop strategic communications and advocacy campaigns related to public policy issues affecting Capital One and the financial services industry writ large. In this role, you will work cross-functionally with Corporate Communications, Government Relations, Legal and various lines of business to educate lawmakers and regulators at the state, federal and local levels, about issues impacting Capital One and to help move our industry forward through the power of effective policy making. You will play a critical role in project management and stakeholder coordination, partnering not only with teams across the company but also with industry trade associations, coalitions, and national reporters. You will provide real-time, strategic counsel to senior leaders, influence alignment with external stakeholders and support execution of a wide range of grassroots activities, earned media, and digital advertising strategies. Your contributions will help lay the groundwork for the Policy Communications subdivision within the Public Affairs team, creating a community of practice and management for the legislation and regulations that touch all aspects of the enterprise.

This position requires exceptional judgment, creative problem solving, attention to detail, action orientation and results focus. A knack for explaining complex policy issues and a curiosity about perspectives different from your own are essential to the success of this role. Humility, adaptability and a sense of humor will also serve you well.

  • Draft messaging, talking points and rapid response materials on a range of legislative and regulatory issues for internal and external audiences.
  • Support Government Relations to educate internal stakeholders on emerging policy issues and political trends, and provide updates on existing issues.
  • Leverage Capital One data and insights to support the execution of our policymaker education program.
  • Identify consultants and third parties that support grasstops, grassroots and political influencer efforts.
  • Stay abreast of evolving trends in the political, policy and national media environment and apply insights to ongoing strategy and execution.
  • Work seamlessly as part of a cross-functional team, in an open and collaborative environment.
  • Project manage and coordinate programs across multiple stakeholders.

  • At least three years of experience working in a highly regulated industry such as financial services, tech, healthcare, or pharmaceuticals.
  • At least one year of experience working with members of the media.
