Job Summary:
The Legislative Director is tasked with leading and implementing ECU’s legislative strategy in Washington and across the country. In this role, the Director will work with stakeholders in the House, Senate, and state legislatures to promote pro-democracy and reform legislation, and fight back against voter suppression and pro-dark money policies. They will join a collaborative work environment and partner with the VP of Policy, the rest of the Policy team, and the organization overall to ensure ECU continues increasing its legislative impact.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop and pursue legislative priorities and agendas focused on fixing democracy, eliminating big money’s influence in politics, and protecting voting rights at both the federal and state levels.
- Track, analyze, and report on relevant legislative proposals, bills, and political trends that impact democracy reform, campaign finance, and voting rights.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key members of Congress and their staff, relevant committees, state legislators, and other political stakeholders to advance the organization’s policy objectives.
- Draft federal and state legislation.
- Prepare policy briefs, talking points, and testimony.
- Represent ECU publicly at meetings, events, panels, and other opportunities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have at least 7-10 years of experience in legislative affairs, policy analysis, and advocacy, particularly related to democracy reform, campaign finance, and voting rights. A deep background in the federal and state legislative processes, along with the ability to track and analyze relevant policy developments, is essential. Strong relationship-building skills, with a proven track record of working effectively with lawmakers, political stakeholders, and coalition partners, are critical. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to prepare policy briefs, talking points, and represent the organization in public forums, are required for success in this role. Job Location:
This is a remote position, but the Legislative Director must be located in the DMV area and have the ability to attend meetings and events in Washington, D.C., on a daily basis. Regular work-related travel is required.
