Summary

APV is seeking two dynamic, strategically minded Policy Directors or Vice Presidents (based on experience) to lead high-impact portfolios within its policy work. APV’s focus areas include federal policy related to science, technology, civil service reform, environmental permitting, global health, as well as policies supporting families and children, such as paid leave, the child tax credit, and childcare.

Candidates do not need to be subject matter experts in these areas but must have a strong interest and desire to learn and master policymaking on these issues.

Reporting to either the President or SVP, each role offers the opportunity to step into a visible, external-facing leadership position with significant influence in shaping policy, building bipartisan relationships, and representing APV to key stakeholders including members of Congress, thought leaders, and funders.

One of these two hires will also take the lead on programming and overseeing operations at APV’s new in-house, intimate event space for convening policymakers, partners, and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Shape and lead legislative, political, and policy strategy across a wide variety of focus areas

Build and maintain relationships across both chambers of Congress, sectors, and parties

Represent the organization externally to funders and partners

Own and drive bipartisan coalition-building for major policy verticals

Lead the development of new organization-wide initiatives

Spearhead APV’s network-building in key segments of Congress (committees, subcommittees, and chambers)

Play a pivotal role in multiplying the impact of a fast-growing bipartisan organization

Experience

Director: 3-9 years of experience; Vice President: 10+ years of experience with demonstrated readiness for a visible, external-facing leadership role interacting with key stakeholders on the Hill, important nonprofit and PAC donors, and policy experts shaping bipartisan legislation

Prior experience in Congress, the federal government, lobbying, nonprofits, trade associations, advocacy, or policy organizations

Proven ability to operate strategically and in a bipartisan manner to craft and secure agreement on relevant policy issues, working closely and collectively with both sides of the aisle

Demonstrated tact, diplomacy, and credibility

Ability to multitask on various policy and legislative issues while effectively leading a cross-functional team to make progress on the organization’s key policy initiatives

PAC experience a plus

Ideal candidates are:

Political athletes with high cross-partisan “political fluency,” social intelligence, and a strong desire to make progress on critical policy issues

Low-ego, high-emotional intelligence individuals ready to take on impactful, challenging work in an intense startup environment

Mission-driven generalists with a proven track record of policy execution

Excellent communicators, both in writing and in person

While policy experience is valued, APV prioritizes aptitude, attitude, and ambition over specific subject-matter expertise. The work demands flexibility, political dexterity, and the ability to operate across parties, ideologies, and policy topics.
