Susan Athey

Economics of Technology Professor
Stanford Graduate School of Business

Professor Susan Athey is The Economics of Technology Professor at Stanford Graduate School of Business. She received her bachelor’s degree from Duke University and her PhD from Stanford, and she holds a honorary doctorates from Duke University and London Business School.

She previously taught at the economics departments at MIT, Stanford, and Harvard. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Science and is the recipient of the John Bates Clark Medal, awarded by the American Economics Association to the economist under 40 who has made the greatest contributions to thought and knowledge.

Her current research focuses on the economics of digitization, marketplace design, and the intersection of causal inference and artificial intelligence. She has worked on several application areas, including timber auctions, internet search, online advertising, the news media, and digital technology for social impact.

As one of the first “tech economists,” she served as consulting chief economist for Microsoft Corporation for six years, and has served on the boards of multiple private and public technology firms. She also served as a long-term advisor to the British Columbia Ministry of Forests, helping architect and implement their auction-based pricing system. She was a founding associate director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, where she currently serves as senior fellow, and she is the founding director of the Golub Capital Social Impact Lab at Stanford GSB.

From 2022 to 2024, she took leave from Stanford to serve as Chief Economist at the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division. Professor Athey was the 2023 President of the American Economics Association, where she previously served as vice president and elected member of the Executive Committee.

Session Title: Fireside Chat: The Political Landscape and How Redistricting Could Shift the Balance of Power

Jill Holtzman Vogel founded Holtzman Vogel in 2001, a national law firm with offices in Washington DC, VA, FL, NY, AZ, TN, and UT. In addition to managing the firm, Jill specializes in ethics, campaign finance law, and tax-exempt organizations. Jill has spent her career counseling party committees, Presidential, Congressional and state candidates as well as donors, lobbyists, corporations and non-profits on complex regulatory and ethics rules. She is consistently recognized nationally as a top lawyer in her field, including by Chambers USA, and she speaks frequently on issues involving corporations, non-profits, ethics and lobbying rules.

Prior to starting the law firm, Jill held the position of Chief Counsel of the Republican National Committee, where she led the national party’s legal effort during the 2004 Presidential election; served as Deputy Counsel at the Department of Energy, working with the White House, the Energy Secretary, and other Federal Agencies to implement Energy initiatives; ad held the position of Deputy Counsel at the Republican National Committee, where she handled state and federal election law and party rules matters. Following the 2000 election, Jill represented the Bush-Cheney campaign as counsel in West Palm Beach and Osceola County during the Florida Presidential Recount, and served as staff counsel for the 1996 Republican National Convention in San Diego, California.

In 2007, Jill was elected to the Senate of Virginia, where she represented the 27th Senate district for 16 years.

Jill has been very active in the community over her career and is currently on the Board of Visitors for the College of William & Mary, where she received her undergraduate degree in government and religion. She received her law degree from DePaul University School of Law.

Chad Jones

The STANCO 25 Professor of Economics
Senior Fellow, Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research

Session Title: A.I. and Economic Growth
Charles I. (Chad) Jones is the STANCO 25 Professor of Economics at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the Econometric Society, a former co-editor of Econometrica, and the author of two undergraduate textbooks. His research centers on the causes and consequences of long-run economic growth. Most recently, he's focused on how population and economic growth interact and the economics of artificial intelligence, growth, and existential risk.

A frequent speaker and guest lecturer at Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan, and Stanford GSB, Jon is known for delivering practical, actionable insights on innovation, leadership, and scaling operations.

In his book, The Algorithm: The Hypergrowth Formula That Transformed Tesla, Lululemon, General Motors, and SpaceX (March 2026), Jon shares a behind-the-scenes look at how iconic companies scale and outlines a playbook leaders can use to drive sustained growth and impact.

Jon began his career at Bain & Company and is a graduate of Northwestern University.

Brody Mullins is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and author of The Wolves of K Street: The Secret History of How Big Money Took over Big Government.

The book, published by Simon & Schuster, is the definitive account of the rise of corporate power and lobbying in Washington. In two decades as an investigative reporter for The Wall Street Journal, Brody wrote scores of ground-breaking stories about the intersection of business and politics, exposing scandals that prompted new laws and regulations for powerful government officials, lobbyists and Wall Street traders.

In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, Brody won the George Polk Award and was twice won the Everett Dirksen Award for best coverage of Congress. Washingtonian calls him one of the 50 best reporters in politics. He has appeared on Fox, CNN, MSNBC and his work has been published by The Washington Post, New York Times, Vanity Fair, Politico and The Atlantic.

Brody grew up in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Gonzaga College High School and Northwestern University. He lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife, two daughters and son.
