Impact

October 2026

Ten years after Donald Trump’s surprise victory, could the 2026 midterms deliver another election night that defies expectations? Nathan Gonzales examines why Democrats may have opportunities in traditionally Republican strongholds, why Republicans shouldn’t be counted out in unexpected places and how assumptions about the political map could leave both parties unprepared for surprises.

From Capitol Hill and corporate public affairs to grassroots advocacy and policy communications, the 2026-27 Foundation Fellows bring a wide variety of experiences and perspectives to the profession. Meet the 14 rising public affairs professionals who make up the largest cohort in the program’s history, and get to know the people behind the résumés, from their career journeys and accomplishments to their favorite comfort foods and dream travel destinations.

On December 3, we’re bringing together public affairs professionals and technology experts in Washington, D.C. and Brussels for FutureProof.PA to explore how emerging technologies are reshaping the profession and what it takes to turn innovation into action.

Through transatlantic discussions, real-world case studies and interactive labs, you’ll explore everything from AI adoption and governance to the evolving skills and strategies public affairs teams need to succeed.

Political and community viability can make or break a major investment, yet too often public affairs professionals are brought in after critical decisions have been made. Drawing on lessons from data center development and other major infrastructure projects, Roy Wells, president and CEO of Triad Strategies, says that public affairs belongs at the heart of project planning, helping organizations understand stakeholder concerns, assess political risks and make more informed investment decisions from the start.

The partner at Serlin Haley LLP reflects on his unexpected start in government affairs at the Massachusetts State House, expanding his firm’s practice across 37 state capitals and the importance of building relationships across political differences. He also shares his favorite ways to explore Boston.
