Advocacy Team Organizer

Reports to: Senior Advocacy Teams Manager
The Friends Committee on National Legislation seeks a full-time Advocacy Team Organizer to support new and prospective members of FCNL’s Advocacy Teams in developing deep advocacy skills. The organizer will help connect with the national network of 1,400 people across 135 Advocacy Teams around the country. This position reports to the Senior Advocacy Team Manager and is part of the Strategic Advocacy Team.
The Advocacy Team Organizer is responsible for all aspects of recruiting and launching 10-20 Advocacy Teams each year. This includes recruiting and retaining participants for deep advocacy work. The organizer spends significant time on the phone, in Zoom calls, and traveling to lead in-person workshops across the country.
In addition to launching new teams, the organizer supports existing teams and develops strategies for nurturing the community within them. Other duties include hosting info sessions on Zoom, supporting existing teams in recruiting new members, and strengthening the network overall.
Essential Job Duties
Advocacy Teams
- Meet recruitment goals to launch 10-20 teams a year in collaboration with the Senior Advocacy Teams Manager and other FCNL staff. This includes:
- Cultivate leads: Build relationships with new advocates who contact FCNL or are referred to us. Connect advocates near existing teams with their team leader (Communicator). Assist those interested in starting a team in their community.
- Host committees: Facilitate 1-hour info and organizing sessions with groups forming an Advocacy Team. Each call requires preparation and follow-up.
- Launch workshop: Travel to the advocates’ community to launch a team through a one-time, 3-hour workshop. Follow up afterward with reports back to FCNL.
- Trainer support: Serve as a backup trainer for new teams in their 3-4 part new team training series, as needed.
Each step requires follow-up procedures, support with recruitment, general correspondence, and more.
- Build, maintain, and grow a structure of distributed, grassroots recruitment and leadership.
- Recruit a working group of 5-10 volunteer organizers from existing Advocacy Teams. These organizers will use FCNL tools and resources to recruit local team leads.
- Develop and run regular training and support calls for volunteer organizers. Assist them in recruiting leads and launching teams.
Service to the Larger Advocacy Team Program
- Host information sessions on Zoom for those interested in the Advocacy Teams program.
- Support broader recruitment calls, such as Intro to Advocacy.
- Meet with existing teams, statewide networks, and regional anchors to brainstorm new places to start teams.
- Provide training and support as teams engage in recruitment.
- Support the Senior Advocacy Teams Manager in creating content and training for teams, including leading occasional training sessions.
- Provide information about teams to support monthly programming as needed.

Minimum Required Job Qualifications
- 2-3 years of experience in grassroots organizing on peace and justice issues.
- Experience in volunteer training and leadership development.
- Public speaking and workshop facilitation experience.
- Ability to speak from personal experience to inspire volunteers to engage in deep advocacy.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with people from various backgrounds.
- Ability to travel up to 60% of the time to launch new teams.
- Exceptional organization, time management, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work remotely with a team, share reports, and work independently as well as collaboratively.
- Comfortable working within an environment that reflects Quaker testimonies of peace, equality, simplicity, and truth, and within the Quaker process of FCNL.
- Agreement with FCNL’s policy positions and an understanding of faith-based legislative advocacy.
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated track record or interest in U.S. foreign policy, militarism, and peacebuilding.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Frequently required to sit or stand for long periods.
- This job requires frequent travel, including overnight travel, up to 60% of the time within the U.S.
Work Expectations
- Compensation: The anticipated salary range for candidates in the DMV is $61,500 – $65,000 per year. The final compensation package will depend on the candidate’s background, qualifications, and internal equity.

- Workweek: The Advocacy Team Organizer’s schedule is variable, with a 37.5-hour average workweek. Travel expectations are up to 60%, with some evening and weekend work required. Compensatory time may balance evening and weekend hours. This position can be in-office or 100% remote, with the supervisor determining the arrangement. Occasional in-office presence may be required for meetings, events, or special projects.
- The employee must be available for in-person support at the Annual Meeting/QPPI conference (November 13-17, 2024) and the Spring Lobby Weekend conference (March 2025).
