Job Title: Associate Legislative Director
Reports To: National Legislative Director
Position Overview: The Associate Legislative Director acts as a representative of PVA in the day-to-day working of the federal legislative and budget process to advance PVA’s goals and objectives. To achieve these goals, the Associate Legislative Director must initiate and maintain direct involvement with members of Congress and their staff, federal departments, and agencies on issues of mutual concern; provide in-depth analysis of legislation and regulations; and prepare written products, including letters, testimony, and reports, as well as regular legislative updates and articles for PVA publications.
Position responsibilities and duties:
- Responsible for researching and writing of testimony for presentation to congressional committees as well as maintaining contacts with appropriate staff members of Congress and related Executive branch agencies. Required to testify before relevant congressional committees.
- Serves as a contact with other veterans service organizations and disability rights organizations. Takes responsibility for informing the Government Relations leaders with regard to policy and issue positions taken by other veterans service organizations and disability rights organizations.
- Serves as a contact with the Department of Veterans Affairs in monitoring and responding to health care and benefits concerns in other government agencies.
- Prepares reports on congressional and federal regulatory activity bearing on changes and reforms in federal health care and benefits and disability rights policy.
- Participates with Government Relations staff to establish cooperative networks with other PVA National Office Departments, PVA chapters, and other advocacy organizations to develop agendas to improve and advance PVA’s mission.
- Contributes to departmental publications and webinars as required.
- Supports the Chief Policy Officer and the National Legislative Director in developing and marketing solutions to problems and conflicts in health care quality access and benefits delivery encountered by veterans in general and PVA members specifically, as well as protecting their disability rights.
- Attends meetings, conferences and seminars to represent the department and PVA as assigned.
- Performs other duties related to the mission of the department and PVA as assigned by the National Legislative Director.
