The Association of American Railroads(AAR), the world’s leading railroad policy, research, standard setting and technology organization that focuses on the safety and productivity of the U.S. freight rail industry, seeks a hands-on Communications Associate based in Washington, D.C. The ideal candidate has 3-5years’ experience in communications, preferably working on public-facing issue advocacy campaigns, and is a strong writer. Candidates should be fully capable of assisting communications with media, policymakers, industry stakeholders, coalitions, and allies, including through media relations, social media, email marketing and event management. This position has day-to-day responsibility for monitoring news, social and competitive landscape to identifying trends and opportunities for engagement on key rail issues. Candidate will take a leading role in growing engagement with AAR-owned channels, including emails, website and social channels. This position also provides support for weekly team meetings, coordination with our agencies and promoting our activities with members and allies. This person must be a self-starter who can manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Attention to detail and working well within a team is essential. Core Functions: General Communications Support•Media relations support (triage calls, research, writing)•Monitor media coverage, assist with daily clips and identify trends, problematic information and opportunities for engagement Draft LTEs, op-eds, press releases and statements•Track and field media requests, coordinating with the Director of Media Relations on appropriate response•Monitor competitive, business and policy landscape; research issues; identify opportunities for engagement and provide background information and initial tactical recommendations •External Relations Support•Analyze and report on key reports and opinions from relevant stakeholders, particularly industry allies and detractors•Newsletter Support•Write and distribute weekly update to AAR membership on communication activities and deliverables•Proof, upload and distribute AAR’s newsletter, The Signal •Assess newsletter performance and provide recommendations for audience engagement and growth and content improvements•AAR.org, Content and Social Support
