Communications Director

Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development

Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development is seeking a full-time Communications Director with writing, public-facing and nonprofit experience to lead the organization into its next phase of growth and development. Reporting to the Founder and/or Executive Director, the Communications Director will aid in developing and executing the Institute’s marketing plan through website, social media, written and visual materials, and public presentations;  develop and execute its strategic communications plan; and, manage all internal and external communications.

Responsibilities:

Website Management, Social media and Science Writing

  • Maintenance and expansion of the Institute’s website, including writing a new Explore and Learn section
  • Manage all of the Institute’s social media accounts and implement strategies to grow the organization’s social media presence, following, and overall traffic
  • Develop and implement a plan to communicate with our email audience regularly, and to increase the number of subscribers
  • Create content for blogs, op-eds, social media platforms, and other miscellaneous projects
  • Manage marketing of international Congresses, workshops,  retreats, annual Gala and special projects
  • Oversee staff and independent contractors in the production of specials, videos, slideshows and other programming for advocacy and development
  • Identify and participate in public forums, including academic publications and convention trade shows
  • Actively promote the Institute and its events to improve community, media, and national engagement
  • Write correspondence for various staff and key projects
  • Manage and collaborate with internal and external contributors in the writing of summaries, publications and articles from retreats, conferences and working groups

Other Writing

  • Create materials for staff in other departments with a communications eye for clarity and consistency
  • Work with President and existing staff on development projects, including preparation of the Annual Report, brochures, and other publications

Strategic Communications and Marketing Plan

  • Refine communications goals and strategies per the Institute’s Strategic Plan, and oversee the implementation of comprehensive communications plans for advocacy, development and visibility of the Institute
  • Develop messaging guidance that persuasively shapes how the Institute presents its positions to the media, lawmakers, donors, and other audiences
  • Create and implement internal and external marketing plans, including the coordination of a consistent organizational image in all external communications
  • Develop and manage the Institute’s communications team, design firm vendors and other contractors

Media Relations

  • Interface with state and national media, including building alliances with reporters and bloggers, pitching stories, and coordinating interview requests
  • Work with President and/or Executive Director and public relations agency to develop content for press releases, press advisories, statements, op-eds, and letters to the media, and prepare staff for media interviews
  • Work with agency to organize and promote press events, including our upcoming National Congress, research retreats, and workshops
  • Manage media lists and tracking of news coverage

Intern Management

  • Recruit, hire and manage college and graduate-level interns to help execute strategic communications and marketing plan
  • Work with President to develop internship criteria to ensure that the experience is mutually beneficial to interns and Institute
  • Work with local universities to identify and select internship candidates
  • Delegate tasks using project management software and supervise intern team to ensure that all projects are completed in a timely fashion

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work at the Children and Screen’s Institute office on Long Island.

    • A mature, high-energy leader who acts as a unifying force, positioning communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
    • Sincere commitment to collaborate with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
  • Skills (Required):
    • Superb writing, voicing and editing
    • Fluent with WordPress and Powerpoint
    • Versed in the latest trends in multi-platform, cross-channel communication
    • Experience managing a website and social media content, newsletters, and other digital communications strategies
    • Interest in and the talent to manage a team of student interns
    • Public speaking including presentation design and management (from slide decks to panel moderation)
  • Skills (Preferred):
    • Hands-on graphic design (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) and editing for a variety of visual assets
  • Experience (5-10 years):
    • Partnership building with interdisciplinary groups, and developing and executing major national projects.
    • Management of PR agencies, and other media related vendors
    • Proven specialization in non-profit communications
  • Education
    • Advanced degree in Science writing/science journalism (from a top-tier science journalism program or journalism school)
