Scientific discovery has a vital role to play in our lives and our future, and Springer Nature, a leading global research publisher, is at the forefront of communicating some of the most important and interesting research to a wide global audience. At the heart of this work is our fast-paced external communications department, and we’re now looking for a Communications Manager to support these efforts. This is an excellent opportunity to be involved in promoting research and other content published in leading journals across the Nature Portfolio, BMC and Springer journals. The work we publish generates widespread, high-quality media coverage worldwide every week, in print, broadcast and online channels.
We’re looking for an experienced communications professional to join our fast-paced global communications team handling the promotion of published content and reputation management for Springer Nature’s journals. You will be joining a high performing team working hard to increase public understanding of new scientific findings including research on climate change, medical advances and space science. In addition to working with research authors, institutional communications departments and journalists internationally, this position will see you work closely with key figures in the editorial, publishing and social media teams of Springer Nature, and the chance to work with global colleagues.
Key responsibilities include:
- Identifying research papers and other content for promotion, taking into consideration the many media channels available, and deliver widespread, high-quality media coverage
- Finding ways to promote content to a wider audience (such as production of social media assets) or taking steps to minimize potential reputational damage
- With support as needed from the Senior Communications Manager or Communications Director, handling urgent or crisis situations such as embargo breaks, controversial papers or emerging issues (for example, retractions and other research integrity issues)
- Maintaining good working relationships with the global media and proactively seeking to build contacts and further develop knowledge of the science media landscape (specifically within the US)
- Building strong relationships with editors and other internal colleagues, to boost their engagement and promote the work of the Journals and Editorial communications team
- Responding in a timely, professional fashion to a wide range of phone and email queries from journalists, authors and institutional press officers
- Visiting institutional press offices to maintain good working relationships and promote the Journals and Editorial communications team
- Representing the Journals and Editorial communications team at conferences, meetings and other external events
- Promoting Scientific American content and editors
Skills and knowledge:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work with and influence senior colleagues and stakeholders
- A strong and broad scientific knowledge and an awareness of controversial or complex scientific issues
- A sound understanding of the international media landscape and of academic publishing
- The ability to organize and maintain a fluctuating workload, assimilating new tasks when required, and with excellent ability to prioritize and manage urgent or critical situations
- The ability to take responsibility for workloads and specific projects, and to problem-solve when necessary
- Attention to detail and the ability to adhere to established procedures
- The ability to work well within a team
Experience:
- Have significant experience in a communications role — preferably in a scientific communications environment, including media relations and issues management experience
- Demonstrate knowledge of academic research and publishing
- Be skilled in stakeholder management
- Experience of using social media in a professional environment
- Ability to work effectively in a highly complex, diverse and changing environment
- Experience with Microsoft Office, content management systems and social media sites
- Experience with video editing would also be beneficial
