Position Purpose & Scope:

Under the general direction of the Chief Strategy Officer, the Communications Officer is responsible for working with the leadership team to develop and implement the Agency’s communication and marketing strategies. The incumbent will act as a liaison between the Agency and the community, media, and local government. In addition, the incumbent will coordinate and develop content for publications, reports, news releases, public facing website, outreach documents, and other message development. The Communications Officer is familiar with our contract funding terms and conditions and the Board of Directors’ goals, objectives, and policies.

Typical Duties:

Community Relations

(This is an essential function of the job)

Collaborate with agency leadership and staff to create and implement annual communication plan by assessing needs and developing a comprehensive strategy

Develop strategies for engaging with community organizations and act as a liaison between these organizations and Child Action, Inc. to build agency presence in the community

Ensure Child Action, Inc. is represented at community gatherings and public meetings that have a connection to Child Action, Inc.’s mission and vision

Establish and maintain effective relationships with journalists and local media, and maintain a media database to amplify the Agency’s mission

Marketing/Branding

(This is an essential function of the job)

Develop marketing strategy and maintain a strong organizational brand through consistency of visual and print communications

Serve as a point of contact for all media requests; including print and online sources

Draft press releases, background material, or fact sheet data for media or public inquiries

Develop and maintain social media content, and website materials to advance agency mission

Produce agency publications and assist in development of agency newsletters

Creates strategic communications plan

Inter-department Communication

Provide management with relevant information and analysis on community updates

Build strong working relationships with staff to be able to clearly articulate needs for engagement and communications activities

Train and lead other staff and the Board of Directors to support communication efforts

Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in a field that develops skills related to typical duties; and

Four (4) years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, editing and production

Qualifications, Knowledge, Abilities:

Knowledge of the concepts, practices, and procedures within the field

Ability to demonstrate excellent proficiency with Microsoft Office and publishing software

Ability to demonstrate excellent analytical, math, and computer and training skills

Ability to make public presentations

Ability to demonstrate advanced verbal and written communication skills and customer service orientation

Ability to demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills

Ability to think clearly and logically; and analyze complex issue

Ability to manage and develop a communications program

Ability to speak effectively to respond to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints

Ability to use experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals

Ability to maintain confidentiality of information

Ability to work effectively with others

Ability to comply with agency safety and ergonomics policies and practices

Ability to meet the requirements of daily attendance

Ability to understand the problems and issues facing families from a variety of ethnic and economic communities and provide information and services in a respectful and empathetic manner

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and interpret and draw valid conclusions

Position requires a high degree of judgment and problem solving

Ability to speak effectively to respond to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints

Physical Factors:

Works in an office setting. Work is primarily sedentary; but may also work outdoors at field sites on an incidental basis and requires light physical effort; may require greater physical effort on an incidental basis.

Possess visual capability and digital dexterity to operate a computer and other standard office equipment.

Make fine visual distinctions upon proofreading written documents and viewing information on a computer screen.

May be subject to various job demands such as high volume of work and tight deadlines.

This position requires travel. Staff applying for or holding positions will be required to successfully meet Child Action, Inc.’s motor vehicle requirements.
