Position Summary – Communications Officer

 

The Communications Officer is responsible for supporting the overall coordination, development and management of all internal and external HFX communications strategies.

The Communications Officer will work with and report directly to the Communications Director, while maintaining daily contact with HFX Staff, including the Office of the President. They will serve as a point of contact for a global network of media partners and help increase the visibility of HFX’s programs including the Halifax International Security Forum and the Peace With Women Fellowship.

HFX is looking for individuals who are curious and eager to learn, who enjoy thinking through situations from all sides and who appreciate the value of working with others to improve the quality of their work.

As a member of a growing organization, the Communications Officer will have opportunities to learn about global security issues, connect with like-minded organizations in Washington, DC, and contribute to other organizational initiatives as needed.

 

Responsibilities

  • Draft, edit and publish communications content including social media posts, press releases, email campaigns, written correspondence, annual reports and program materials and other communications products, while maintaining HFX’s voice;
  • Assist with running the organization’s online publication, HFX Conversations, which includes researching potential contributors and securing interviews;
  • Serve as a liaison between the Communications Director and HFX Staff to ensure clear internal communication;
  • Assist in the creation and implementation of media campaigns to advance HFX programs and events;
  • Update the organization’s media contact lists and website;
  • Follow current events related to the international security agenda;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years of relevant experience or an acceptable combination of education, training, and/or relevant experience;
  • Ability to demonstrate a real commitment to the organization’s mission;
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills;
  • Strong organizational skills with serious attention to fine detail;
  • Ability to problem-solve, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and effectively prioritize without supervision;
  • Ability to provide strategic advice and make recommendations on communications issues;
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize information from different sources;
  • Strong interpersonal skills including being able to interact with people from different cultures;
  • Ability to work well both independently and as a member of a team;
  • Experience with advertising, media relations, web publishing, social media, graphic design and Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Mailchimp a plus.
