General Duties
Assist in the implementation of the Security Industry Association’s (SIA) public policy initiatives and related programs. Work closely to support the Senior Director and Associate Director of Government Relations on legislative and regulatory issues. Serve as an additional liaison to the SIA government relations committee, working groups, outside consultants, and external associations/organizations. Represent SIA before external audiences as directed by the GR team.
Key Responsibilities
Government Relations
Track and analyze state and local legislation relevant to the security industry for SIA Government Relations and provide timely information on developments to the SIA Policy Council and various member groups as needed. Assist in similar tracking and analysis of federal legislation.
Assist in coordinating member committees and working groups as assigned.
Represent SIA in relevant industry coalitions on policy matters as determined by SIA GR.
Represent SIA before policymakers and staff on select state and local legislative matters, as determined and guided by SIA GR, including travel to support these initiatives.
Assist in Congressional outreach and relationship-building on Capitol Hill.
Assist SIA member-led advocacy projects as assigned.
Communications
Draft letters, issue papers, memos, issue updates, presentations and talking points within assigned areas of responsibility.
Provide support in the development and delivery of state and local bill testimony.
Work closely with SIA communications team to generate relevant GR digital and social media content, including online public policy updates (blogs, webinars, videos, etc.) and in-depth reports as needed.
Event Planning/Management
Support the development and execution of SIA Security Hill Day, Government Summit, and SIA policy briefing and relevant networking events. Coordination with partner organizations and with the SIA membership, marketing, and operations teams.
Cross-departmental support for other SIA events as needed.
Requisite Skills and Attributes
Strong research, writing and presentation skills.
Ability to analyze complex public policy issues and recommend potential actions.
Strong member service orientation and commitment to the success of the association and the security industry.
Willingness to learn new issues particularly around the use of security technology.
Ability to complete projects simultaneously and help to ensure completion by stated deadlines.
Professional attitude and presence.
At ease with supporting internal colleagues on cross-department initiatives.
Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office, database management, and social media.
Availabity and comfort level to travel (~20%) in support of SIA programs and initiatives.
Education and Experience
Baccalaureate degree in Political Science, Government, Public Policy or related field.
Relevant experience with government agencies, legislative offices, law enforcement agencies or trade associations.
1-5 years of relevant work experience (Manager level position).
