Overview
Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) is seeking a Deputy Vice President for its Public Affairs team. This position reports to the VP of Public Affairs and will be responsible for managing two core areas: strategic initiatives and polling/research.
The Deputy Vice President will:
- Lead the development and execution of strategy and insights-focused projects in coordination with other departments and senior leadership.
- Oversee the research and polling unit that commissions regular studies for internal and external use, leveraging quantitative, qualitative, social listening, AI, and related methodologies.
- Oversee the development and execution of longer-lead strategy projects in areas such as reputation management, new messaging, risk assessment, original thought leadership, strategic planning, industry positioning, and narrative development.
- Coordinate with the broader Public Affairs team and the PhRMA organization to leverage strategic insights across our work.
- Create and execute project plans, memos, slides, and other collateral for the team.
- Manage timelines, budgets, meetings, vendor management, presentations/briefings, and stakeholder support.
- Represent the team internally and with external stakeholders, including delivering high-impact presentations with these audiences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Key Success Factors
PhRMA seeks a proactive, solutions-oriented, strategic thinker who is passionate about strategic insights and advocacy communications. Key success factors for this role include a strong sense of team and collaboration, a proactive focus on results, and the ability to work as an individual contributor.
The preferred candidate will have a mix of research insights, strategy development, and political communications and advocacy. This includes expertise in politics, research/polling, advocacy communications, consulting, strategic planning, and/or project management for large corporations, governments, and/or institutions.
Additionally, they should be an organized, detail-oriented self-starter with excellent communication skills and the ability to convey complex content in an audience-appropriate and compelling manner.
Demonstrated consensus-building among internal and external stakeholders, decision-making, and interpersonal skills are essential. This is a highly visible, fast-paced position that is both internally and externally facing. Accordingly, the successful candidate should be adaptable, able to reprioritize and shift gears quickly, comfortable in a high-pressure environment, and be politically savvy, diplomatic, and responsive.
Professional Experience / Requirements
- 10+ years of experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of strategic insights, the political process, and advocacy environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of strategic planning, consulting, change management, project management, and client relations.
- Team-oriented, collaborative approach that inspires confidence and builds others’ perspectives into our team’s work.
- Excellent communication (speaking and listening) and interpersonal skills.
- Strong project management skills: ability to prioritize, delegate, follow-up, and take initiative.
- Curiosity to inspire the right questions and determination to see projects through.
- The ability to synthesize, distill, and communicate complex issues and ideas to a non-technical audience.
- Ability to work productively with a diverse, bipartisan set of stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree.
Preferred Experience
- Expertise in analytics, using quantitative and qualitative data, and applying it to the business environment.
Potential Salary
$187,100 – $266,700 per annum. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
