By focusing on systemic change, AV is working to improve the lives of American families, strengthen their communities, and promote their economic opportunity.

## Position Overview

The Communications team seeks to be an accelerant for AV’s philanthropic and policy missions. We work to strengthen AV’s brand and reputation, inform the public debate, and advance AV’s policy and advocacy goals.

The Director, Content will define AV’s voice and produce written and other content that advances AV’s mission. This role serves as the organization’s senior writer and editor, setting and maintaining editorial standards across owned content – including thought leadership, op‑eds and related advocacy materials, social media, and more. The Director will help define AV’s overall content and channel strategy, in partnership with other communications and AV leaders. The Director also will manage a network of freelancers and partner with communications leaders and executives across AV.

This individual will report to the Executive Vice President, Communications and will be based in AV’s Houston, TX or Washington, D.C. office.

## Core Responsibilities

– **Serve as senior editorial voice** — writing and editing for the AV Board, leadership team, and subject‑matter experts (e.g., opinion pieces, speeches, policy narratives, social copy, and external announcements)
– **Develop advocacy content** — for issue campaigns, major policy moments, and executive visibility initiatives
– **Build and manage writers** — including freelancers; set strategy and drive quality across a distributed production model
– **Strengthen owned content** — ensuring outputs reflect AV’s voice, mission, and strategic priorities
– **Partner on editorial calendar** — contributing to the team’s content pipeline
– **Establish editorial standards** — including style guides and resources governing quality across teams and external partners
– **Embed AI in workflows** — helping integrate AI and other tools to optimize content production

## Required Qualifications

– **Bachelor’s degree**
– **10+ years of experience** in journalism, content strategy, communications, brand writing, or related fields, with a record of high‑quality work across formats and audiences
– **High tolerance for ambiguity** and comfort in dynamic, initiative‑based environments with shifting priorities and cross‑team collaboration
– **Exceptional writing and editing** — including executive‑level content, opinion and advocacy writing, and narrative development; ability to translate complex policy ideas into compelling narratives
– **Experience managing writers** or content teams, maintaining quality across distributed production
– **Strong editorial judgment** and strategic instincts; ability to shape content strategy, not just execute
– **Creative format experience** (e.g., media, visual storytelling)

**Salary range:** $160,000–$200,000
