Director, Government Affairs (Oversight and Investigations)
The Director, Government Affairs (Oversight and Investigations) will be part of the UHG External Affairs organization, responsible for working with colleagues across External Affairs, UHG Legal, and the Company to manage Congressional and state oversight matters. This individual will have dual reporting into the UHG Legal department.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Driving strategy and management of Congressional and state oversight inquiries and ongoing scrutiny of health care markets, working in partnership with colleagues in Legal, Communications, and the Business.
- Providing strategic direction, leadership, and oversight to internal and external resources on high-profile federal and state oversight-related matters, including development of any written and oral testimony, in partnership with Communications.
- Liaising with Legal to manage document productions and written responses to oversight inquiries, as well as staff briefings and response to general Congressional inquiries.
- Developing executive briefing materials, talking points, executive updates, and presentations. Partnering with federal government affairs colleagues and Legal to facilitate executive-level meetings with federal policymakers and staff regarding oversight matters.
- Anticipating and monitoring federal and state oversight trends that may materially impact the Company.
- Contributing to effective advocacy efforts to advance and protect the Company’s objectives at the federal and state level.

Required Qualifications:
- 8+ years of experience in legal, political or government affairs and strategic communications experience on the Hill, at a law firm or consulting firm managing Congressional oversight for clients, or as Committee staff or Agency staff.
- Advanced knowledge of the Congressional oversight process and political dynamics.
- Existing relationships and credibility with Congressional oversight entities, including understanding of reputational risks and the intersection of policy, politics, communications, and relationship management.
- Experience developing and executing successful oversight management strategies.
- Proven track record of representing an organization with the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in internal and external settings.
- Outstanding written communication, presentation, project management, and negotiation skills, with a demonstrated ability to consistently prepare high-quality, time-sensitive internal and external deliverables.
- Local and commutable to Washington D.C. or willing to relocate.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience or background in the health care industry or another highly regulated environment.
Washington D.C. Residents Only:
The salary range for this role is $147,300 to $282,800 annually. Pay is based on several factors, including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
