# Director, Government Relations

The Doctors Company has an opportunity for a Director of Government Relations. This is a hybrid or remote opportunity depending on the final candidate’s location from the company’s offices, preferably located in the Northeastern, Mid-Atlantic, Midwestern, or Southeastern United States.

## Position Mission

The Director of Government Relations is responsible for representing the organization before state governments within an assigned multi-state region, and in other jurisdictions as needed. This role leads state-level advocacy efforts within their assigned states, serves as the primary liaison with state officials, and drives legislative and regulatory strategies that advance the company’s public policy priorities.

This role advocates legislative and regulatory matters in alignment with the company’s mission, advises and informs the various business areas that are impacted by legislative and regulatory developments, and presents the company’s position on legislative and regulatory matters.

Working with minimal supervision, the Director partners closely with internal stakeholders, external lobbyists, and trade associations to monitor, analyze, and influence legislation, regulation, and judicial developments impacting the organization and its policyholders.

## Responsibilities

– **State-level advocacy** — Lead and execute government relations and advocacy strategies across an assigned region.
– **Legislative tracking** — Track, analyze, and report on legislation, regulations, elections, and government actions impacting the organization.
– **Primary state contact** — Serve as the main liaison with state legislators, regulators, elected officials, and their staffs.
– **Policy representation** — Represent the company’s policy positions before elected officials, public agencies, and industry organizations.
– **Testimony delivery** — Meet with state public policy makers and provide written or oral testimony.
– **Lobbyist oversight** — Manage and oversee the work of external lobbyists, consultants, and outside counsel.
– **Strategic alliances** — Build and maintain alliances with trade associations, peer companies, professional organizations, and advocacy groups.
– **Internal collaboration** — Collaborate with internal teams and senior leadership to align public policy positions with organizational goals.
– **Business unit support** — Work with business units to determine legislative or regulatory actions needed to be more effective.
– **Advocacy materials** — Develop advocacy materials, communications, and educational resources related to legislative and regulatory issues.
– **Grassroots strategy** — Develop grassroots advocacy strategies and communications relating to pending legislation and regulatory matters.
– **Research and reporting** — Conduct research and prepare internal and external reports, briefings, and articles.
– **Political strategy** — Support the development, coordination, and implementation of corporate political strategies and special initiatives.
– **Political contributions** — Develop political contribution and engagement strategies, evaluate requests, and direct political committee activities while ensuring compliance with laws.
– **Event participation** — Attend political, legislative, and charitable events on behalf of the organization.
– **Trend monitoring** — Stay current with trends and developments in the area of expertise.
– **Other duties** — Perform other related duties as assigned.

## Qualifications

– **Bachelor’s degree required**
– **Minimum 10 years of experience** in state or federal government relations
– **Multi-state region experience** strongly preferred
– **Healthcare, insurance, or liability background** highly desirable
– **Senior-level knowledge** of legislative and political processes and government functions
– **Strong political acumen** and analytical skills
– **Leadership experience** managing government relations initiatives and external partners
– **Strategic capability** to develop tactics supporting organizational goals
– **Long-term planning ability** to achieve proactive results
– **Coaching and development skills** for leading government relations efforts
– **Collaborative relationship-building** with legislators, staff, regulators, and internal stakeholders
– **Exceptional communication skills** for presenting complex or controversial topics
– **Ability to analyze complex legal, regulatory, and policy documents**
– **Skilled negotiator** able to influence diverse stakeholders
– **Strong judgment and discretion**, with ability to maintain confidentiality
– **Comfort with data and financial concepts**
– **Ability to travel frequently**
