We are currently looking for an External Affairs Director, to be based in Columbus, OH.

The External Affairs Director represents the organization’s position on legislation and regulatory affairs to all levels of government as well as to officials of regulatory and other agencies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop and execute an external engagement strategy to ensure Abbott’s nutrition business (AN) competes effectively within a changing external environment:

I)Provide Executive Management with insight and strategic recommendation as to how AN should shape the broad external environment including public, legislative and regulatory.

II)Take a co-ordinating and oversight role for the critical workstreams that fall under the External Engagement umbrella (currently 4 workstreams), plus a leadership role of the WHO Code/ BMS Marketing workstream.  Ensure each workstream is contributing to the overall external engagement strategy with set objectives and impact measurements.

III)Work collaboratively across all Abbott functions to identify and provide solutions to the key stakeholder issues and needs across the AN business, with a focus on the pediatric business.  Anticipate key issues that will affect the business in short and long term and ensure there are strategies in place to mitigate any impact.

IV)Play an active role to ensure Abbott has a voice with key stakeholders who influence the external environment, including NGOs/ advocacy groups, non-state actors, clinical groups and the general public in addition to regulations and legislation impacting our products.  This would include acting as Abbott representative with some of these stakeholders (in alignment with global citizenship, R&D, GA and Regulatory).

V)Work with Global Citizenship, Country and Regional GA, Regulatory and Public Affairs to develop company positions and messaging that is aligned with Abbott strategy.

VI)Leverage talent and resources available across Abbott to provide leadership and execute on key projects.

VII)As necessary work closely with affiliates to ensure they are able to understand, articulate and implement locally the company’s positions.  Ensure a consistent global position is adopted by all affiliate and cross-functional groups.

VIII)Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.

Main Responsibilities

Highly experienced in Government Relations management.

Responsible for protecting the organizations business interests in all matters involving politicians, policy-makers, regulators, and government departments and agencies.

Key member in the formulation of Government Relations strategy, policy, and procedures.

Responsible for the implementation of company-wide Government Relations policies and procedures.

May also represent the organization’s interests in dealings with trade, industry, or professional organizations.

Directs monitoring of current political trends and develops relationships with government representatives.

Qualifications

Associate’s Degree

At least 7 years’ experience in Government Relations management
