California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (CNA/NNU), California’s largest nurses union, seeks a Legislative Advocate to take on a diverse portfolio within the union’s legislative campaigns in California.

Under the direction of the Government Relations Director, the Legislative Advocate’s primary focus will be to advance the union’s objectives through our California state‑level legislative program. CNA provides critical leadership in the state on progressive labor and social justice policy measures, including single‑payer health care (CalCare), health and safety protections for health care workers, regulating AI and other algorithmic technologies, progressive taxation, environmental justice and climate change, and strengthening labor law.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for the right person to make a real difference in building the industrial power of registered nurses as well as the movement for health care, economic, and social justice.

The position of Legislative Advocate in the Government Relations department is open for appointment in the Sacramento office.

## Responsibilities

– **Legislative lobbying** — Lobby members of the California Legislature and regulatory agencies to advance the union’s priority legislation and other policy measures.
– **Advocacy materials** — Develop and write position letters, testimony, talking points, and other materials on legislative, regulatory, and policy priorities set forth by the Union.
– **Verbal testimony** — Provide verbal comments and testimony on behalf of the Union.
– **Member engagement** — Support nurse membership involvement in legislative and policy advocacy.
– **Coalition building** — Build alliances with other organizations to advance the Union’s legislative and policy agenda.

## Requirements

– **Advocacy experience** — At least 3 years of experience working professionally in a union or social justice advocacy organization or in a legislative advocacy position in California or another state.
– **Campaign execution** — Demonstrated ability to independently execute state‑level legislative or advocacy campaigns.
– **Government relations knowledge** — Demonstrated in‑depth knowledge of governmental relations and related issues.
– **Relationship building** — Ability to develop, build, and maintain professional relationships with government leaders, staff, coalition partners, and potential allies.
– **Communication skills** — Highly developed communication and verbal advocacy skills.
– **Writing and analysis** — Highly developed written and analytical skills.
– **Union collaboration** — Demonstrated ability to build relationships with allied organizations and labor unions.
– **Teamwork** — Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team.
– **Time management** — Effective time management skills, including the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects.

## Preferred Experience

– **Health care policy** — Demonstrated knowledge of health care and nursing workforce policy areas.
– **Labor policy** — Experience with labor or health policy issues.
– **Education** — Bachelor’s degree or relevant advanced degree a plus.
– **Fast‑paced environments** — Ability to work in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment.
– **Microsoft Office** — Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Excel, Word).
– **Travel** — Ability to travel extensively and valid driver’s license.

## Compensation & Benefits

Competitive salary of **$106,236 to $196,356**, dependent on skills and experience.
Generous benefits package, including comprehensive family and dental plan, and a generous pension.
