POSITION SUMMARY:

POSITION OBJECTIVE

A4A’s Environmental Affairs team supports A4A member airlines in driving environmental progress and achieving ambitious sustainability and climate goals while ensuring the industry’s ability to continue to meet the public’s demand for air transportation services and remain a critical contributor to sustainable economic growth and prosperity. This position provides the opportunity to leverage sustainability and climate policy expertise to tackle sustainability priorities for major U.S. airlines, with room to grow as a leader and expert in aviation sustainability and sustainable aviation fuels.

The Sustainability Manager will be a critical member of the A4A Environmental Affairs team and will be responsible for supporting and implementing climate change, sustainable aviation fuel and sustainability policies and initiatives. Working closely with the Managing Director, Environmental Affairs, the manager will support efforts to achieve A4A’s sustainable aviation fuel goals, through research, analysis and external engagement. The role will also support the Director, Environmental Affairs with projects related to sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions reporting requirements and policy developments. The manager will coordinate and work closely with other members of the Environmental Affairs team, reporting directly to the Vice President of Environmental Affairs. Occasional travel is required.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific Duties

  • Support the development of strategy and execution of initiatives needed to achieve A4A’s sustainable aviation fuel’s goal, including conducting research, analysis and written materials.
  • Closely track sustainability reporting legislative and regulatory developments, and prepare comments and input, as well as communicate developments to A4A members.

General

  • Assist with the preparation of analyses (for example, legal, technical or economic) to support the formulation of A4A policy, strategy and positions.
  • Prepare written materials, including background/issue assessment documents, comments on proposed regulations, position papers and correspondence regarding environmental issues impacting aviation.
  • Work with the A4A Environmental Affairs team and member airlines in formulating strategy, policy and positions on relevant issues.
  • Support the execution of Environmental Affairs Council and Committee meetings, including establishing priorities and tracking actions.

REQUIREMENTS

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working on environmental and sustainability policy. Direct experience and expertise in sustainability and greenhouse gas reporting requirements and/or sustainable aviation fuels is preferred.
  • Master’s or law degree required.
  • Strong analytic, research, writing, organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate frequently and effectively within A4A, with members, external audiences and other stakeholders as appropriate and needed.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently; work well with colleagues in a collegial environment; develop working relationships with stakeholders; synthesize technical information in a policy context and interact on a professional level with lawyers as well as non-lawyers in diverse fields.
  • Proficiency in using web-based information and data management tools.
  • Occasional travel is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • All A4A employees must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
  • If approved by the department supervisor, A4A employees have the option to work from home on Mondays and Fridays. All employees are expected to work in the office Tuesdays through Thursdays.
