PRC Baker Places Overview

PRC Baker Places is a non-profit residential treatment agency that has provided the San Francisco community with alternatives to institutional care since 1964. Our direct care professionals provide counseling and case management services to previously homeless adults living with co-occurring diagnoses of chronic mental illness and substance use disorder. All agency services are provided from the philosophy of social rehabilitation which integrates teaching daily living skills in a safe and healthy environment.

Summary: Communications and Policy Position

This position is responsible for supporting agency communications, including internal and external communications, social media, and the Black Leadership Council (BLC), an initiative of PRC, which facilitates public policy. This role is positioned in the policy department and plays an integral role in the development and implementation of two new programs:

  1. A policy fellowship (paid internship program) for PRC’s Black Transgender clients.
  2. A new partnership supporting educational opportunities, matriculation, and success for Trans students at City College of San Francisco.

Reports to: Chief of Policy & Government Affairs


Position Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage PRC and BLC social media channels.
  • Support internal and external communications for the organization.
  • Implement communication strategies through print, electronic, and social media channels to support organizational goals.
  • Compose and prepare correspondence that is sometimes confidential.
  • Develop presentation materials; take and distribute minutes at BLC and other meetings.
  • Support the areas of development, marketing, earned media, and public relations for the agency.
  • Work with the Chief of Policy and Government Affairs and the Chief Development Officer on comprehensive campaigns.
  • Create proposals to donors, policy makers, or other influential key figures.
  • In partnership with the Chief of Policy and Government Affairs, support the policy objectives and agendas for PRC and the Black Leadership Council.
  • Maintain relationships with local and state elected officials.
  • Attend policy coalition meetings.
  • Write and send legislative support or opposition letters.
  • Support the development and implementation of new programs, including a policy fellowship and research in partnership with CCSF.
  • Manage interns.
  • Some travel to Sacramento for advocacy days and meetings.
  • Other related tasks to be determined.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or commensurate experience; 3-5 years of prior communications and policy experience preferred.
  • Poised and professional manner.
  • Proficient computer and database skills, including all social media platforms, WordPress, Mail Chimp, Photoshop, video editing software, Microsoft Office Suite, and Salesforce.
  • Highly responsible, pro-active, organized, capable of meeting and maintaining multiple timelines, and working well independently and with others.
  • Ability to work well with and serve as an administrative liaison between elected officials, executive team members, donors, and community representatives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and assignments.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Interest in and understanding of social and economic justice, HIV/AIDS, and mental health issues preferred.
  • High level of initiative, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.
  • Unquestionable integrity and commitment to professional ethics, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Sensitivity to low-income individuals, people with psychiatric disabilities, people with HIV/AIDS, people of color, active drug users, persons with a history of homelessness or incarceration, and individuals in the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Some evening and weekend work required.
