Policy Specialist – Legislative and Public Policy Practice Group

Arnold & Porter is seeking a Policy Specialist for the Legislative and Public Policy Practice Group in the Washington, DC office. The position will focus on policy issues supporting education, workforce, and technology clients, though other issues may arise where support is needed.

About the Legislative and Public Policy Practice Group

The Legislative and Public Policy Practice Group is Chambers-rated as one of the top legislative practices at a national law firm. The group is comprised of approximately 40 people and operates in a high-energy, fast-paced environment that rewards initiative and teamwork in the pursuit of quality client service.

The primary focus of the group is Congressional and regulatory advocacy on topics including:

  • Appropriations and federal funding
  • Education
  • Technology
  • Environmental and energy
  • Financial services
  • Foreign relations
  • Defense
  • Healthcare and life sciences
  • Tax
  • Telecommunications
  • Trade
  • Transportation
  • Veterans affairs

Clients include globally recognized brands, Fortune 500 companies, leading associations, educational institutions, foundations, innovative start-ups, healthcare systems, life sciences companies, foreign governments, and coalitions.

Education and Workforce Lobbying Team

The education and workforce lobbying team’s clients include institutions of higher education, education technology companies, child care providers, education nonprofits, and associations. The Policy Specialist position will work on a variety of policy issues, including:

  • Higher education policy and student loans
  • Workforce issues
  • Child care
  • Veterans education
  • Appropriations
  • Nutrition
  • Privacy
  • All related agency actions

Qualifications

Qualified candidates for this position will have 1 to 3 years of experience working in federal legislative and public policy roles, including work in:

  • Congress
  • The Executive Branch
  • A trade association
  • Interest groups
  • A corporation in government relations

Applicants should have a four-year degree, excellent academic credentials, and references. All Policy Specialists will be required to become registered lobbyists under the Lobbying Disclosure Act.

Note: Submitting a writing sample of more than five pages or failing to submit a transcript will eliminate a candidate from consideration.

Salary

The anticipated base salary for this position is $60,000 to $70,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including:

  • Qualifications of the individual applicant
  • Years of relevant experience
  • Level of education attained
  • Certifications or other professional licenses held
  • If applicable, the location from which the applicant will be performing the job
