A. The Senior Communications Specialist will liaise with local media, state and local government representatives, and attend state, local and community events. Coordinate a variety of internal and external communications-related projects. This position will research, write and edit content for internal and external audiences/media ranging from websites, social media content, to the internal company publications (including The Shipbuilder, Speedy News). The position will be responsible for overseeing and/or selecting, writing and reviewing editorials and articles, including planning and coordinating protocol support of NASSCO’s magazine. Project management, from initiating contact with participants to securing appropriate approvals, is an essential function of this position.
B. This individual will support GD NASSCO’s Public Relations and Government Relations efforts, activities and programming. Reporting to the Manager of Communications, the Senior Communications Specialist will utilize broad expertise or unique knowledge in leading and performing assignments related to creating internal and company publications and communications that maintain and improve the company’s image, support NASSCO’s business strategy and engage employees.
C. The Senior Communications Specialist will actively participate in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.
D. The Senior Communications Specialist supervises lower level departmental staff (Communications Specialist and/or Photographer).
E. Write and edit copy for a wide range of media and purposes: websites, The Shipbuilder, newsletters, executive bios, Speedy News, social media content, press releases, and other communications materials, in support of company communications goals and programs.
F. Directly supervise the Writer/Editor of The Shipbuilder series of publications.
G. Attend and represent NASSCO’s interest at local and/or state council, chamber, legislative and municipal events and meetings, as required. Provide reports and feedback to Management relative to issues likely to impact the company, the marine or ship building industry and/or the manufacturing footprint.
H. Coordinate conferences, community events and press interviews.
I. Develop marketing communications campaign.
J. Prepare agendas and conduct research based on company strategic goals.
A. Bachelor’s degree required; preferably in public relations; other relevant disciplines (journalism, communications, and public policy) may substitute. Fluency (written and oral) in Spanish desirable.
B. Minimum of seven to nine (7-9) years of public relations or relevant discipline/industry experience required.
C. Demonstrated critical thinking skills and an understanding of effective communications based on educational background or job-related experience.
D. Experienced with engaging state, local and community leaders in support of NASSCO initiatives.
E. Experienced with public speaking and formal presentations.
F. Strong project management skills including prioritization of multiple tasks and deliverables.
G. Strong research and writing skills, and attention to detail.
H. Ability to work independently and within a dynamic team environment.
I. Sound editorial judgment in discerning what info is published internally and what is shared externally.
J. Eye for design.
K. Solid knowledge of grammar and style.
L. Word and PowerPoint skills required; desktop publishing and photo editing skill desirable.
M. Experience in Adobe Creative Suite in Design or PageMaker.
N. Solid computer software skills: Photoshop, Adobe illustrator, In Design, MS Outlook, etc.
O. Comfort with managing multiple, aggressive deadlines.
P. Creative writing and editing skills.
Q. Strong decision-making skills, drafts speaking points and key messages
R. Successful project management skills.
S. Experience writing for multiple audiences.
T. Experience writing communications for Executive Management, including speeches, reports, articles, press release.
U. Experience designing Websites and electronic publications.
V. Prepare briefing materials
A. Ability to work across all levels of the organization.
B. Ability to engage state, local and community leaders, media and employees.
C. Excitement for cross functional work teams to solve problems.
D. Effective communication and presentation skills.
