SUMMARY
Asia Society is looking for a Senior Press Officer to develop, manage, and execute media relations strategies and tactics generating press coverage for Asia Society at large, with a specific focus on our policy and current events work.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Increase media coverage of Asia Society’s policy work and experts. Build relationships with relevant members of the media to ensure our experts are placed, including for op-eds, live interviews on multiple platforms (TV, radio, podcast, etc.), and through statements to promote Asia Society’s policy content and programs to a broader audience.
- Develop media relations strategies related to signature campaigns, initiatives, experts/leaders, and other organizational priorities.
- Promote policy reports and initiatives. Draft press releases, handle pitching, coordinate with experts and social media team on announcements shared via institutional and individual accounts.
- Monitor breaking news for opportunities to solicit and collate our experts’ rapid reactions, and ensure those reactions get to the media in a timely manner to maximize coverage.
- Field incoming press requests and ensure timely responses.
- Draft and pitch op-eds. Refine existing op-ed partnerships and establish new ones as needed.
- Manage press invites and press attendance at public events, including traveling press pools for visiting foreign leaders.
- Staff and prepare experts for interviews.
- Cultivate our internal policy experts, fellows, and leadership to be successful ambassadors for Asia Society in the media, online, and at public events.
- Advise global departments and centers on generating media coverage of major conferences, report launches, and other announcements.
- Work with Development and Asia Society leadership to maximize press coverage of our major events.
- Monitor press coverage and ensure relevant stories are amplified internally and externally, coordinating with internal departments as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 6-8 years of related experience.
- Experience working with media focused on Asia, politics, or public policy.
- B.A. in related field; M.A. preferred.
- Excellent oral and written skills.
- Comfort managing active engagement with journalists utilizing news and editorial judgement; ability to foster new relationships with media around the world. Established network of press contacts preferred.
- Ability to think on the fly and exercise sound judgment in high pressure moments.
- Experience leveraging social media to drive press attention and vice versa.
- A passion for Asia and the work of Asia Society.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Salary Range: $70,000 – $110,000
Compensation within this range is highly dependent on education, skills, experience, and organizational equity.
