Senior Vice President, Strategic Communications

This position is responsible for devising communications strategies that advance the travel industry’s agenda, leveraging tactics like media relations, thought leadership, and tools such as research, events, and coalition building. This person will lead all communications elements, including a staff of at least six and manage U.S. Travel’s communications function, including communications staff and agencies that support related functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of U.S. Travel’s communications strategy.
  • Motivate, develop and manage strategic communications, media relations, executive and policy communications, and digital media staff, including external consultants and agencies.
  • Align all aspects of the association to ensure consistent public messaging.
  • Optimize research and policy teams to drive thought leadership and advance issue campaigns.
  • Wake up each day to advance the travel industry’s agenda by leveraging an array of communications techniques.
  • Develop and track department’s annual budget and expenses.

Attributes:

  • Demonstrated experience in creating and advancing successful communications-intensive issue campaigns.
  • Success in marketing a product or concept.
  • Thorough understanding of the national and DC media landscape.
  • Solid understanding of federal policymaking and legislative process.
  • Ability to think strategically using data to develop innovative and boundary-pushing communications strategies.
  • Experience with the application of message testing across multiple audiences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and knowledge of AP Style Guide.
  • Strong collaborator with inclusive mindset.
  • Lead with confidence and inspire confidence among colleagues at all levels.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Fifteen+ years’ work experience in the fields of communications and/or public relations is desired.
  • Seven+ years’ work experience leading and managing a team leadership required.
  • Vast network of key media outlets, journalists, and industry influencers
  • Experience managing communications campaigns through various channels including print, broadcast, digital, and social.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Head of Media Relations, Director, Executive Communications, and Director, Strategic Communications

Other:

  • Position based in Washington, DC. U.S. Travel staff work in the office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with the option to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays.
