Overview: SchoolHouse Connection, a national nonprofit organization focused on overcoming homelessness through education, is hiring a State Policy Program Manager. This role offers an opportunity to enhance educational and life outcomes for children and youth experiencing homelessness through state policy reform.
Nonpartisan Impact: Since 2017, SchoolHouse Connection’s state policy program has influenced nearly 30 state laws across two dozen states. These laws support homeless individuals and families in areas such as shelter, housing, medical and mental health care, employment, and education from early childhood to postsecondary.
Responsibilities: 1. Legislative and Administrative Strategy:
- Develop and execute nonpartisan legislative and administrative reform strategies.
- Lead advocacy activities required for successful policy reform.
2. Implementation Oversight:
- Ensure effective implementation of enacted state policy reforms.
- Develop training, tools, and awareness materials for comprehensive implementation.
3. Advocacy Network Management:
- Manage SHC’s Advocacy Network for state and federal policy agendas.
- Provide training and oversight for effective engagement throughout the year.
4. Relationship Cultivation:
- Cultivate relationships with partners in state policy campaigns.
- Collaborate with elected officials, youth, families, educators, advocates, and diverse stakeholders.
5. Research and Reporting:
- Conduct legislative research and produce reports on state laws and related activities.
- Organize legislative hearings and develop necessary materials.
6. Content Creation:
- Develop policy advocacy materials, including briefs, fact sheets, FAQs, and digital content.
- Contribute to SHC’s e-newsletter and social media content.
Qualifications:
- Minimum three years of successful state legislative advocacy experience.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and communication skills.
- Proven track record of developing and executing advocacy initiatives.
- Commitment to nonpartisan advocacy and collaboration with diverse partners.
- Strong strategic, research, and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small, dynamic team.

- Minimum Salary: $60,000 per annum
