Vice President of Communications Position

Victory Fund and Victory Institute are seeking a Vice President of Communications who will report to the President & CEO and serve on the organizations’ leadership team. They will directly supervise the Digital Director and Creative Director. The Vice President of Communications will set and guide communications strategy for the organizations, manage the communications team, and serve as a spokesperson for the organizations. They will lead on securing earned media for the organizations and will oversee the organizations’ digital and social media strategy, email fundraising and digital acquisitions, and marketing. They will also oversee communications and public relations efforts around fundraising and programmatic events and support LGBTQ+ candidates and elected officials with their communications needs.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, mentor and lead a four-person communications team (including the Vice President of Communications), with two direct reports;
  • Serve as the primary media contact and proactively pursue earned media and press visibility for the organizations;
  • Proactively secure beneficial media coverage for LGBTQ+ candidates and elected officials;
  • Develop and execute on a strategic communications plan that increases the visibility and brand awareness of the organizations and cultivates relationships with media and key influencers;
  • Oversee the organizations’ digital platforms strategy – including websites and social media;
  • Supervise and support the email marketing program, digital fundraising program, e-newsletter program, and the email and phone acquisition programs;
  • Oversee and expand the suite of communications services available to candidates and elected officials and support their communications needs in rapid response and crisis communications situations;
  • Establish a marketing strategy that prioritizes marketing collateral materials and increases brand awareness – including the development of the annual report and other publications;
  • Lead on writing research reports – including the annual Out for America and Out on the Trail reports;
  • Support teams in narrative and set design related to programmatic and fundraising events;
  • Serve as a primary spokesperson and key point of contact in high-importance media situations; and
  • Develop the annual budget for the communications department, establish staff performance goals and monitor staff performance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience;
  • At least 10 years’ experience in media relations and communications, with strong preference for earned media and/or press secretary experience (existing relationships with reporters is preferable);
  • Experience in managing and growing a high-performing communications department;
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing a comprehensive communications plan, media relations, and marketing program to advance an organization’s mission and goals;
  • Experience with digital and email fundraising as well as social media strategy;
  • Ability to effectively and proactively collaborate with members of a senior leadership team;
  • Excellent and persuasive communicator who can connect with diverse audiences – from reporters to donors to board members;
  • Ability to balance competing priorities and perform a wide variety of tasks over the course of the workday;
  • Ability and willingness to work in rapid response situations where urgency is a necessity;
  • Exceptional writing, proofreading and editing skills;
  • Interest in and knowledge of the LGBTQ+ movement and U.S. politics; and
  • Commitment to the mission is a must.

The position is based in Washington, DC. The salary range for this position is $130,000 to $160,000 commensurate with experience. Please include salary requirements in your materials.
