Letter from the Chair

Cherish Your Favorite Humans

By: Julie Vieburg
Senior Manager of Political Advocacy and Strategic Operations
Land O’ Lakes Inc.

July 2 officially marked the halfway point of 2022. For the past few years, I’ve taken the week off and used the down time for reflection – both personal and professional – on how the first half of the year went and what I want to accomplish in the back half. This year I also took time to specifically reflect on the people I surround myself with – and how/if they’ve helped me grow.

During my previous life as a campaign fundraiser, I worked for more than a dozen amazing Chiefs of Staff, but one was particularly wonderful. Cherie was my favorite human. She made call time fun, the Wasserman Room bearable, and running out of nametags almost an adventure. Over the years I worked with her, she taught me several valuable lessons that have helped make me the person I am today:

[vc_toggle title=”Read More”]Don’t sweat the small stuff – to celebrate Cherie’s retirement in 2015, a group of us gathered at the American Legion (Kenneth H. Nash Post 8 to be exact) for their Saturday Bingo. During the final round, with the biggest cash jackpot, Cherie won! But she missed calling ‘BINGO’ before the next number was called. I blame the noise, although it may have been the day drinking… Regardless, Cherie handled her loss like a champ and congratulated the new winner.

There’s more to life than work – I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who traveled internationally as much as Cherie did. I had no idea where (or what!) the Baltic states were until I met her. She taught me how important it is to take the time to travel. To get outside of my self-imposed bubble and learn new things, meet new people, try new foods, and see new things. I loved living vicariously through Cherie’s travels – and this is a good reminder that I need to start my own adventures (googles flight to Paris…).

Check in on your people – Cherie was the first person to take me to celebratory drinks when I landed my current job at Land O’Lakes, Inc. (which then required a move to MINNESOTA). Of course we went to the Legion. In the past few years, more often than not when I returned to D.C. for work, we’d grab breakfast at Jimmy T’s to catch-up. During the pandemic we’d text updates to each other – her, photos of her granddaughter Ellie, me, photos of my dog Charlie. Not much needed to be said – just a quick check-in to know the other was doing well. Two months before she passed away, I sent her a selfie with a fellow former staffer to let Cherie know “[we] are talking about how much we love you.” She replied with “How very special. You made my day.” I’m so glad I sent that text. If someone is on your mind, let them know. Unless it’s an ex – this is not a sign to text them.

Cherie was more than a boss – whether it was sending travel recommendations for Austria, setting my parents up with a White House tour, or comparing notes on which Broadway show is best (Once vs. War Horse vs. Book of Mormon). She taught me so much, but most important, she taught me how to be a friend. Learn more about Cherie here. [/vc_toggle]
