Director of Advocacy Position
Location: Alexandria, VA
Job Responsibilities
Advocacy:
- Develop and implement comprehensive advocacy strategies at both the federal and state level to influence legislation related to truck size and weight.
- Establish and nurture relationships with key lawmakers, Hill staff, and other policymakers to advance CABT’s agenda.
- Organize and participate in advocacy events, such as hearings, meetings, and press conferences, to promote the organization’s mission.
Communications and Outreach:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy, including media relations, social media, and public outreach efforts.
- Create and disseminate advocacy materials, press releases, association newsletters, reports, etc., to raise awareness and educate the public about the issue.
- Create and maintain internal CABT media lists and push stories to local media outlets.
- Work with senior staff to execute social media strategies.
- Work to generate media opportunities for Coalition partners and prepare these individuals for interviews.
- Serve as a spokesperson for the Coalition as needed.
Coalition Building:
- Maintain and grow existing relationships with national coalition partners/organizations.
- Recruit new national and regional coalition partners/organizations.
- Collaborate with national and regional coalition partners to create an activation plan when appropriate.
- Represent the Coalition in coalitions, forums, and conferences.
Grassroots Organizing:
- Work with senior staff to develop and execute state strategies and tactics to assigned states.
- Educate and activate local government officials, law enforcement, public works, etc., on the Coalition’s mission.
- Generate “grasstops” letters and other communications to Members of Congress.
Strategic Planning:
- Working alongside CABT President and senior staff to develop long-term and short-term advocacy plans that align with the Coalition’s mission and goals.
- Monitor legislative developments to adapt strategies as needed.
- Prepare and present reports and updates to the organization’s leadership and Board.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, or a related field.
- Proven experience in advocacy, lobbying, and policy analysis, with a minimum of 7 years of experience. Hill experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of the legislative process, government affairs, and public policy.
- Strong communication and public speaking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain partnerships with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience with modern advocacy tools, technologies, and data-driven decision-making.
- Dependable and well-organized, must be a self-starter able to accomplish goals and projects with tight deadlines.
- Ability to multi-task and adapt to the changing priorities of advocacy campaigns.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Passion for transportation safety and public policy advocacy.
Salary Range: $85,000-$100,000 with opportunity for year-end bonus. Benefits package includes paid medical and dental, and IRA with match, and quarterly bonus opportunities. Position open until filled.
