Senior Director, Government Affairs

Okta’s Senior Director of Government Affairs will be an integral member of the Legal Department reporting directly to the Chief Legal Officer. You will have a leading role in shaping Okta’s government affairs strategy and operations. You will operate independently to develop and lead Okta’s government affairs practice at the U.S. federal, state, local, and international levels. You will work in concert with, and serve as a key advisor to, the Chief Legal Officer and senior management on legislative and regulatory policy. You will facilitate relationships across various governing bodies, authorities, commissions, and councils, in order to represent and further Okta’s interests.

What you’ll be doing

  • Develop Okta’s government affairs program and approach to engagement with international, and U.S. federal, state, and local levels. Monitor and report on key developments in tech regulation and policy across relevant jurisdictions.
  • Advise and educate the company and legal team on the implications of emerging technology policy and regulatory proposals. Partner with leadership and other stakeholders to address policy-related matters, including the implications of emerging technology trends, proposed legislation, and regulatory proposals.
  • Drive engagement with policymakers at the international and U.S. federal, state, and local levels; including building durable and strategic relationships on behalf of the company.
  • Collaborate with the business to drive policy to expand addressable markets and work closely with the public sector teams to promote the company, remove hurdles, and nurture opportunities for the company within the public sector.
  • Respond to inquiries or calls for submissions from legislative bodies or government regulators.
  • Develop and manage a program, including counseling internal stakeholders and managing reporting, for oversight of political lobbying efforts.
  • Support, drive, and maximize Okta’s trade association and industry consortia memberships.
  • Partner with corporate communications to develop public policy positions and support the company in relevant industry events, media opportunities, and responsive issues relevant to our public sector business.

What you’ll bring to the role

  • Bachelor’s degree and strong academic credentials.
  • Minimum 12+ years of relevant experience with government affairs, public policy, or government relations in both the public and private sector.
  • Deep familiarity with the technology sector, including public policy trends in cybersecurity, privacy, artificial intelligence (AI), and antitrust/competition.
  • A comprehensive understanding of policy and legislative process in international and U.S. federal, state, and local and policy-making process (EU and APAC experience a plus).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and internal clients.
  • Proactive, team-first approach with practical business judgment.
  • A sense of humility and humor.
  • Impeccable ethics and integrity.

Annual Base Salary Range

The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in California (excluding San Francisco Bay Area), Colorado, New York, and Washington is between: $249,000—$373,000 USD.
