The Apartment Association of Greater Dallas (AAGD) is hiring a Government Affairs Specialist. This is an office job located in Irving, Texas. The Specialist will interact with local, state, and federal legislative bodies to represent and protect the interests of AAGD members and the rental housing industry.

Government Affairs Specialist

The Government Affairs Specialist will report to the Vice President for Government Affairs and will assist on a variety of tasks, including:

Government Affairs

  • Assist the VP of Government Affairs with the Legislative Committee meetings and Independent Rental Owner Committee Meetings.
  • Monitor communication and advocacy with counties and cities in an 11-county region in North Texas.
  • Work with the Texas Apartment Association (TAA), National Apartment Association (NAA), and National Multi Housing Council (NMHC) on monitoring communication and advocacy at the state and federal levels.
  • Coordinate and communicate as necessary with other trade associations, chambers of commerce, and interest groups with similar objectives.
  • Assist elected officials with apartment-related constituent requests and casework.
  • Attend after-hours government meetings and association-wide events as necessary.

Political Affairs

  • Facilitate the filing, administration, fundraising, and meeting planning related to the Apartment Association of Greater Dallas Political Action Committee (AAGD PAC).
  • Prepare and submit required Texas Ethics Commission reports for AAGD PAC.
  • Work with the PAC Fundraising Committee on fundraising ideas.
  • Assist with the coordination and execution of PAC events.
  • Attend after-hours events, including political fundraisers as necessary.

Other Responsibilities

  • Assist with AAGD meetings, events, and projects as necessary.
  • Prepare content for Rooflines Magazine, AAGD website, Government Affairs and PAC Newsletter, and posting to social media outlets as necessary.

Travel Requirements

  • Frequent travel around the North Texas area to a variety of AAGD, government, community, and other meetings.
  • Travel to Austin, Washington, and other out-of-town destinations related to government affairs activities and other association meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science or related field.
  • 3+ years’ experience in public policy, political campaigns, or political action committees.
  • Experience with state, local, or federal government or real estate industry is a plus.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the state, local, and federal legislative process.
  • Strong writing, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategic initiatives.
  • Collaborative and independent work capabilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook) or related software.
