Position Overview

The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Grassroots Regional Director assists the Director for Grassroots and Constituent Affairs with the development and implementation of WWP’s grassroots program and oversees day-to-day management of WWP’s volunteer-advocate engagement within an assigned region.

Primary responsibilities for this role include the facilitation of volunteer-advocate management, communications, recruitment, and training through direct outreach, meeting and event coordination, and operational oversight. The Grassroots Regional Director plays a key role in elevating the voice of our post-9/11 veterans by developing and managing a large, geographically dispersed volunteer-advocate network and facilitating advocacy training and engagement opportunities in furtherance of WWP legislative priorities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support the Grassroots and Constituent Affairs Director with the development and implementation of a comprehensive grassroots strategy to engage WWP Alumni, family support members, and other groups and, where appropriate, assist with the advancement of WWP policy priorities.
  • Oversee WWP regional grassroots engagement for an assigned region (e.g., East, Central, West), and provide leadership and operational direction to volunteer-advocate leaders to achieve organizational goals tied to legislative priorities.
  • Build, nurture, and maintain relationships with volunteer advocate leaders, including day-to-day management of outreach to volunteers through email advocacy campaigns and personal outreach.
  • Oversee administration, logistical support, coordination, and execution of advocacy opportunities for the WWP Alumni, including volunteer development and coaching, formal recognition, and annual performance reviews.
  • Coordinate training and curriculum development for volunteer advocates and connect with them to gain support and attendance at grassroots events.
  • Contribute to the development and distribution of relevant grassroots campaign materials, including virtual advocacy programming and training via Zoom, Facebook Live, etc.
  • Track, review, evaluate, and report on regional volunteer-advocate engagements and outcomes.
  • Collect and report results and performance metrics for regional events and activities.
  • Assist with planning and execution of large-scale annual congressional fly-ins and other regional events.
  • Manage Government and Community Relations casework including internal and external referrals and inquiries.
  • Maintain accurate records and data within organizational tracking systems (e.g., Salesforce, Quorum, Cvent).
  • Speak to diverse audiences about WWP programs and develop community support.
  • Collaborate in the development and execution of initiatives like the Annual Warrior Survey, Soldier Ride DC, and Project Advocacy Newsletter.
  • Represent WWP at key events, meetings, hearings, and conferences as necessary.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of WWP’s legislative priorities and the MSO/VSO community.
  • Attend and actively participate in required trainings and meetings (e.g., New Teammate Orientation, ASIST Suicide Prevention, Leadership Training).
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Experience

Requirements:

  • Three years of grassroots outreach and development, preferably involving veteran issues.
  • Five years of relationship-building with military/veteran organizations or similar groups.
  • Five years of staff or volunteer management experience.
  • Three years of experience leading geographically dispersed teams.
  • Two years of legislative, advocacy, and policy experience, preferably in government or nonprofit.

Preferences:

  • Five years of military experience or work with veterans/service organizations.
  • Three years organizing grassroots or community outreach campaigns.
  • Three years working with a nonprofit organization.
  • Experience assisting individuals with storytelling around sensitive topics.
  • Three years of public speaking experience.

Education

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study (or equivalent experience/training).

Preferences:

  • None specified.

Certifications & Licensure

Requirements:

  • Valid state-issued driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain ASIST Certification within 1 year of hire.

Preferences:

  • ASIST Certification.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

  • General office environment; temperature controlled.
  • Up to 50% travel.
  • May require lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Participation in outdoor activities and events under varying weather conditions.

Salary Ranges

For Colorado Applicants: $95,961 – $119,952 annual base salary

For San Diego/Sacramento, CA, and Washington State Applicants: $105,100 – $131,376 annual base salary

For Los Angeles, CA Applicants: $109,670 – $137,088 annual base salary

All ranges are subject to experience, qualifications, and credentials. Position may be eligible for annual performance incentives.
