New Report on EU Public Affairs Details Strategies for Conducting Business in Brussels

Washington (February 28, 2019) – The European Union is undergoing major political developments, creating new complexities and opportunities for public affairs professionals. The insight comes as part of a new report, Opening Doors in Brussels: Managing Government Affairs in the EU, from the Foundation for Public Affairs, the research arm of the Public Affairs Council. The report details changing EU power dynamics, trends to watch and strategies for public affairs professionals to adapt.

“This is a crucial time for companies with government affairs interests in the EU,” said Public Affairs Council President Doug Pinkham. “Brexit uncertainty and new regulations are among the pressing issues that require public affairs professionals to seek smart guidance to stay competitive and succeed in the region. The case studies in the report offer essential insight.”

The EU’s political environment has grown increasingly complex in response to Brexit, the immigration crisis and Euroscepticism. The report shows that while the trends present challenges, they can also open doors.

“While difficult to navigate, the increasingly complex environment can also create opportunities and new points of access,” said András Baneth, managing director of the Public Affairs Council European Office. “The new report will help guide public affairs professionals as they seek to improve their EU operations and provide a roadmap for organizations looking to traverse the changing landscape.”

Decisions made in Brussels often have implications internationally. One issue to watch is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which empowers government to hold tech companies more accountable for data privacy. The report offers government relations professionals a deep dive on the intricacies of GDPR and strategies to adapt.

Exploring trends in digital communications, the report notes how government affairs professionals in the EU tend to lag behind their U.S. counterparts in this space. It provides insight into why this trend is beginning to change and the ways government affairs experts in the EU are embracing social media.

Opening Doors in Brussels provides actionable tips for public affairs leaders to improve their EU strategies. The case studies in the report offer proven tactics that advocacy professionals, no matter where they are located, can benefit from.
