Communications Associate
THE OPPORTUNITY
Located in the heart of San Francisco, the Asian Art Museum is home to one of the world’s finest collections of Asian art, boasting more than 18,000 inspiring artworks ranging from ancient jades and ceramics to contemporary video installations. Dynamic special exhibitions, cultural celebrations, and public programs for all ages provide rich art experiences that unlock the past and spark questions about the future.
Currently, we are recruiting for a Communications Associate to join our team. The Communications Associate identifies and pitches compelling stories to local, national, and international press; securing coverage of museum exhibitions, programs, and initiatives; maintaining a positive profile of the museum broadly in the media ecosystem; and ensuring impact and awareness of the museum’s activities among community partners and stakeholders.
The position regularly engages with staff, vendors, visitors, volunteers, members, and colleagues in a personable and respectful manner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Under general guidance, conceives of and executes communications initiatives and develops strategies to promote exhibitions, events, and public programs in a timely fashion.
- Solicits attention in all media (print, broadcast, online) for multiple projects.
- Writes, edits, and promotes all media materials relating to exhibitions, programs, events, and news, including press releases, media alerts, briefing documents, and printed promotional materials.
- Develops and maintains strong professional relationships with domestic and international media outlets covering arts and lifestyle news.
- Works collaboratively on projects with other museum departments and appropriate external stakeholders to streamline internal communications.
- Arranges, prepares, and accompanies curators and other museum staff on interviews, photoshoots, and filming.
- Responds to and tracks all media requests for information and images.
- Organizes exhibitions, public programs, and event images in our press room, located on the museum website, for media use.
- Supports and maintains our media contacts database and our media aggregation platform (Cision), and researches and meet with new contacts to develop relationships with key reporters, influencers, freelance writers, and other members of the media.
- Organizes press events, including press conferences and previews.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications or a related field and one year of related experience. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Excellent analytical, research, creative problem solving, and organizational skills.
- Strong multichannel strategic communications skills and media contacts.
- Experience overseeing complex long- and short-term projects within budget.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Exceptional project management and organization skills.
- Ability to work on multiple projects with different deadlines.
- Strong computer skills across various platforms.
- Experience developing and tracking budgets.

COMPENSATION
The Asian Art Museum is committed to practicing salary transparency. The hourly range for this position is $30.1439 – $36.2036/hr. This FLSA exempt opportunity includes a generous benefits package, including but not limited to:
- Fully covered medical, dental and vision insurance for employee
- 12 paid holidays (2023)
- 15 days of vacation starting
- 12 days of sick leave
- Group retirement plan starting after one year of employment
This position is represented by Local 1021, Service Employees International Union. New hires typically start at the beginning of the wage range.
