## I. JOB OVERVIEW

### Job Description Summary
The Director, **Government Relations** and **Stakeholder Engagement** at the George Washington University’s Office of Government and Community Relations works in the District of Columbia. The Director reports to the Associate Vice President for Government and Community Relations.

The primary purpose of this position is to manage the relationship between the University and the District government (District agencies and DC Council) and to develop and implement the university’s legislative strategy in coordination with the Associate Vice President for Government and Community Relations. The role also develops and implements an engagement strategy for the university’s stakeholders, including higher education associations, civic groups, and business associations, to promote and support stable and productive relationships for the University throughout the city.

Through coordination with the Associate Vice President for Government and Community Relations, this position monitors, tracks, and analyzes legislative and regulatory proposals to determine potential impact on the University and advises University leadership. The Director maintains responsibility for short‑term and long‑term projects related to tracking policies, legislation, and statutory reports. The role represents the University at legislative or agency hearings, meetings, or briefings, and drafts communications designed to inform university leadership of relevant District legislative and regulatory activities. The Director actively manages and coordinates relationships with DC Councilmembers and their staff, as well as District agency directors and their staff.

This position supports the university’s relationship with the District government and external stakeholders. Responsibilities include representing the university at higher education associations, business organizations, community groups, and civic organizations; managing community relationships; and performing outreach through publishing newsletters, maintaining the website, managing social media assets, and responding to community concerns and interests. The role also creates signature events to promote the university’s profile to external stakeholders.

Additional duties may include identifying key government and community leaders with whom university leadership should meet, creating briefing materials, and coordinating follow‑ups to visits. The Director may represent the institution at peer institutions, local councils, and organizations, and regularly monitors community concerns. The role composes correspondence, reports, memos, or other materials as needed to support projects and activities.

This role manages the community group dedicated to promoting positive dialogue between GW and its neighbors and manages outreach regarding construction and development updates to the local community and District agencies.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

### Minimum Qualifications
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

### Preferred Qualifications
– Working knowledge of District government operations and the budget process
– Approximately three (3) or more years of experience in government relations and/or public policy
– Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with District government officials
– Strong verbal and written communication skills

### Hiring Range
$82,950.66 – $114,012.01
