The Director of Communications reports to the President and CEO and works closely with a peer group of senior staff. They are supported by a graphic designer, communications associate, special projects associate and may work with external consultants.


Develop and execute RPA’s message and vision

  • Set and drive the organization’s overall communications and media strategy; develop and implement annual plans that further the strategy; track and evaluate the level of engagement for RPA’s lead constituencies
  • Develop organizational and campaign messaging that is consistent, timely and relevant
  • Engage staff and members of RPA’s board of directors as spokespeople for the organization
  • Oversee the development and distribution of all print and electronic collateral, including policy briefs, technical reports, and newsletters

Work with leadership to set, articulate and deliver RPA’s top programmatic priorities

  • Lead weekly team meetings to review progress on RPA’s top projects and campaigns, and preview upcoming opportunities
  • Draft and/or edit key advocacy and communication materials, including statements, testimonies, press releases, op-eds
  • Help lead staff discussions about annual priorities with an eye toward elevating RPA’s public presence

Elevate RPA’s brand

  • Shape the content and promotion of the spring Assembly, RPA’s most visible event of the year
  • Represent RPA and RPA’s top priorities as spokesperson to local and national media outlets
  • Manage strong contacts with reporters in NY, NJ, CT and nationally

Strengthen RPA’s digital presence

  • Oversee the development of short videos explaining policy issues and RPA positions
  • Create strategies for maximizing RPA’s use of social media tools, and oversee their implementation

Manage communications within the office

  • Prepare staff for media appearances and public speaking engagements
  • Organize trainings and provide resources to build staff capacity for public speaking, social media and interactions with reporters
  • Strategically support the development department by lending marketing expertise to membership drives and other fundraising initiatives, including the creation of fundraising materials (brochures, annual reports)

Manage the communications department

  • Lead a team of three talented staff members
  • Oversee and manage external communications consultants
